Furthermore, it is said that burning with fire obtained by rubbing wood is like burning with flames by rubbing wood. After diligent analysis and observation, it is not only from that point onward that wisdom arises. Rather, it is said thus: When ordinary beings rely on characteristics such as earth and generate conceptual thoughts without accomplishing anything in any dharma, if they are assisted by samadhi, it is not good if shamatha and vipashyana are not balanced. If they are balanced, they remain as long as they are able. Through effort, diligence, and exertion, for example, a person who wants to perform the work of fire and seeks fire places the rubbing stick on the rubbing board and conspicuously rubs, strives, is diligent, and exerts effort. Through this effort, diligence, and exertion, initially only warmth arises from the rubbing board. When that warmth manifestly increases, sparks appear and smoke billows. When it has become widely and manifestly increased, fire without flames arises. As soon as fire arises, flames immediately arise. When flames arise and burn, they perform the work of fire. Similarly, if one manifestly rubs the wood, strives, is diligent, and exerts effort, then one should constantly rely on and familiarize oneself with the five faculties. One should observe them many times. Just as warmth arises from the rubbing board at the very beginning, one should observe the warmth that goes before and becomes the cause of the arising of burning, like fire, of the person and the dharma, and the non-self dharma, namely the afflictions. Just as when that warmth manifestly increases, sparks appear, one should observe the sparks. Just as when smoke billows, one should observe the kshantis that accord with the truth. Just as when it widely and manifestly increases, fire without flames arises, one should observe the supreme worldly dharmas. Just as when fire arises, flames immediately arise, and when flames arise and burn, they perform the work of fire, one should observe those five powers that are perfectly grasped by the supreme worldly dharmas, and the subsequent arising of the supramundane.

When all elaborations are abandoned, the unseen vision that is extremely clear will appear. Therefore, the effort and lack of diligence in understanding the universal phenomenon as its own characteristic is called "burning." Because there is no self-characteristic, the unseen vision relies on signs to determine the abandonment of all characteristics. Merely remaining in consciousness will generate knowledge that is the same as illusion, so it is called "burning." As asked by Light Protector: "Realizing as it is, it is like the exhaustion of fuel and the extinction of fire." Therefore, just as the flame produced by fire burns, the cause of the arising of non-discriminating wisdom, relying on signs, the discrimination that nothing is established, through the help of samadhi, becoming accustomed to the union of shamatha and vipassana, when the wisdom that nothing is established or nothing is seen arises, there is no need to meditate merely relying on signs, because it has already been separated from these. In the stage of rising, it is also necessary to always rely on the knowledge of distinguishing and searching, inseparable. As stated in the Noble Jewel Crown Sutra: "The meditation of emptiness is inseparable from generosity to wisdom." As stated in the Noble Lankavatara Sutra: "The order of wisdom meditation is briefly explained, the Mind-Only school relies on subduing." And so on, also after shamatha is accomplished, through the order of the wisdom of thought, observation is carried out until conviction, but not meditating on the nature of reality at will after observation. As stated in the First Chapter of the Stages of Meditation: "Thus, after fixing the mind on the object, one should examine it with wisdom." From there to "Pure wisdom is selfless, without appearance, therefore it will be seen" has been well explained. Thus, the order of meditation has been explained, one should only meditate on this. Therefore, through the wisdom of thought, one should become accustomed to conviction. Therefore, through conviction, placing meditation on its meaning, when sinking and agitation and so on occur, pacify them as previously shown. Therefore, just as in the stage of meditating only on shamatha previously, pacifying sinking and agitation and so on, in the present moment of observing various aspects through the wisdom of thought, one should also pacify the meditation of the union of shamatha and vipassana in this way.
