That has already been explained elsewhere. Therefore, it refers to something like that. If individual discernment precedes everything, and nothing is discerned, then that is gradual entry, as the teacher himself said, as mentioned above. The consciousness of individual beings does not suddenly become without an object, that is, it does not change without a cause. That is what is said, not that because the time is not long, the wisdom of non-discernment does not arise, because that is something that others also do not accept. Therefore, it is said like this: Whatever does not have good discernment preceding it, will not become without an object, for example, the appearance of water in a mirage, without good discernment preceding it, so it will not be without the object of water. This yogi also, with an undistracted mind, the destruction of the object of person and dharma, without discernment preceding it, what pervades is non-objectivity. Thus it is said, in the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: Although one meditates on samadhi, it does not destroy the ego-grasping. It strongly arises with afflictions from the outside. Thus it is said. Whatever is not distracted and has good discernment preceding it, will become without an object, for example, the water seen in a mirage, appearing to flow upwards without distraction, is this the end flowing or the middle flowing, etc., with undistracted discernment preceding it, so the consciousness of the object of water arises. This yogi who is a beginner, abiding in calm abiding, is this truly one, or many? Thus, good discernment precedes it, which is the reason of self-nature. Thus it is said, in the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra: Having examined with higher vision, realizing selflessness is entering into the signless. Thus it is said. In the Noble Lankavatara Sutra it says: Great wisdom, for what reason, having analyzed with wisdom, one does not discern the self-characteristic and the general characteristic, therefore, all dharmas are called selfless. Thus it is said. Again, in that same sutra it says: Great wisdom, the horn of an ox, even if broken down into fine dust, does not exist. Even the fine dust is broken down separately into

It does not abide in the characteristic of subtlety. Thus it is said. Also in the Holy Mañjuśrī Play, Mañjuśrī said: Daughter, how does a Bodhisattva conquer the battlefield? The daughter said: Mañjuśrī, whatever distinguishes all dharmas is the object. Thus it is said. From the Holy King of Samādhi: If one individually realizes the selflessness of dharmas, If one meditates on them individually, That itself is the cause of attaining the fruit of Nirvana. Whatever other cause there is, it does not change the field. Thus it is said. In the last part of the Stages of Meditation, at that time, it is said that individual discernment precedes and is able to be attended to, and that it is able to be without an object. It is said thus: Therefore, in the Holy Dharma, the arising of non-mindfulness and non-attention should also be regarded as preceded by correct individual discernment. Why? Because only correct individual discernment can produce non-mindfulness and non-attention, otherwise it is not. Thus, when a yogi examines with correct wisdom, at the time when he does not see any dharma arising in the three times in the ultimate sense, how should he remember and attend to it, and so on. It is also said in the first part of the Stages of Meditation: Holding with the hand of samādhi, with the sword of extremely subtle wisdom, one should remove the thorns of the seeds of wrong discrimination on form and so on, which exist in the mind. Having done so, just as trees uprooted from their roots do not grow on the ground, so too, because there is no root, the mind of wrong discrimination will not arise. Thus it is said. The saying 'without having attained the four dhyānas' also means that when the other party is in a state of equipoise, if there is a mental consciousness, then at that time, what must one focus on without fail? The consciousness of ordinary beings does not arise without a cause and without an object. If there is no mental consciousness, then at that time, how can one realize the selflessness of all dharmas? With what antidote can one abandon afflictions? Thus, how can one become a yogi? Thus it is said, and the reply to that is a hundred kinds of thoughts on the other side.
