From... arise hands, and crafts, and handholds, and water, and threads, and diligence, thereby making various kinds of vessels. Great wisdom! The Tathagatas also, with wisdom and skillful means, completely reverse all the characteristics of apprehending the selflessness of phenomena, or reveal the Tathagatagarbha, or reveal non-self. Like a potter, they reveal it with various kinds of words and letters. Therefore, great wisdom! Revealing the Tathagatagarbha is different from the doctrine of self spoken by the heretics. Great wisdom! The Tathagatas reveal the Tathagatagarbha precisely because they are attached to the various names of the self spoken by the heretics. How can those who have wrong views, who are attached to the view of falling into a non-real self, abide in the realm of the three liberations, possess mindfulness, and quickly attain the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? Great wisdom! For this purpose, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and perfectly and completely enlightened Buddhas reveal the Tathagatagarbha. Therefore, this is not the same as the self spoken by the heretics. Great wisdom! Therefore, in order to dispel the views of the heretics, one should follow the non-self of the Tathagatagarbha. For example, it is said that revealing the emptiness of phenomena, unbornness, non-duality, and selflessness is the unsurpassed ultimate view of the Bodhisattvas. Some have wrong views about the Tathagata, saying: The ultimate truth is not established in anything, so one should only meditate on something clearer than the previous consciousness. To this it is answered: Whatever is focused on what is known, that is meditating on the ultimate truth, such as the consciousness of mind, with the dharma-sphere as its object, having the characteristics of the four conditioned dharmas. This yogi also focuses on something clearer than the previous consciousness, and practices it universally, which is not a contradictory object. Not meditating on the ultimate truth.

Therefore, ordinary individuals cannot transcend the state of ordinary individuals. Enough with elaboration. Some say that one should only meditate on the single self-awareness. To them, I say: Because it is self-knowing, the consciousness that takes mind as its object, is it truly pure? Is it reasonable or unreasonable? They should be refuted with these words. Some say, "What is there to meditate on other than self-awareness? Another consciousness should be taken as the basis, therefore one should only recognize the nature of reality." To them, I say: If that is the case, then because it is dualistic, it is not meditating on the nature of reality, like a pot and the grasping of it. Therefore, these two are important. Because there is no object of knowledge, it is not other-knowing; because there is no duality, it is not self-knowing; if analyzed, it is not true. They should be refuted with these words and so on. Some say that one should only meditate on a consciousness that is without awareness. To them, I say: That is to accept the view of the Tirthikas (non-Buddhists). They say: "Not only is it not just a consciousness without aspects, but it is also not self-aware." How then could that be a yogi? Enough with elaboration. Some say that absorption is only taking something as an object. To them, I say: Whatever takes something as an object is not a true object, like eye consciousness. This consciousness of a yogi also takes something as an object, therefore it perceives a contradiction in its own nature. Some say that it is only not taking something as an object. To them, I say: Whatever does not take something as an object at all will not be seen at all, like the consciousness of an ordinary person. This consciousness of a yogi also does not take anything as an object at all, therefore it is an imperceptible pervasion. Some say that if effort is made, it contradicts the nature of reality, so one should remain in an uncorrected state. If one remains without effort, it becomes meditation. Because it is said that just understanding is enough, to them, I say: Contradicting direct perception, can thirst be quenched by just understanding that there is water? Can hunger be relieved by just understanding that there is food? They should be answered with these words and so on. In the state of absorption, remaining still, effort becomes a fault, because they have not understood the intention of the Buddha and are just following the words.
