Therefore, this is different from Cittamātra. They do not meditate on the emptiness of the parikalpita and paratantra, but only meditate on the parikalpita as being empty. This is indeed true. However, since the paratantra is aimed at the dharmatā, it also seems to be the pariniṣpanna, so it should also be meditated upon. Therefore, Madhyamaka also aims at the pariniṣpanna. In the Ārya Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, the Blessed One said: "The ultimate truth, the true noble ones, I, considering the three niḥsvabhāvatās, therefore taught that all dharmas are niḥsvabhāva, namely, the lakṣaṇa-niḥsvabhāvatā, the utpatti-niḥsvabhāvatā, and the paramārtha-niḥsvabhāvatā. Among these, the lakṣaṇa-niḥsvabhāvatā is the parikalpita-niḥsvabhāvatā. The utpatti-niḥsvabhāvatā is the paratantra-niḥsvabhāvatā. The paramārtha-niḥsvabhāvatā is that the grasping of these as empty is also niḥsvabhāva." In the Ārya Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, it is also said: "That which is destroyed by the mind, there is neither conceptualization nor dependence on others. If there is no established entity, how can the wise discriminate?" Some say that one should practice the great Madhyamaka of Nāgārjuna, and when meditating on it, one should not rely on skillful means, and one should not do anything, but only focus on the profoundness in one's mind. To this I say, there is no distinction between great and small in Madhyamaka. The teacher himself also said in the Sūtrasamuccaya that a Bodhisattva who is not skilled in skillful means should not strive for the profound Dharma. As it is said in the Ārya Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra: "What is the bondage of wisdom bound by the absence of skillful means? It is like this: truly realizing emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and not focusing on the marks and excellent signs, the adornments of the Buddha-fields, and the maturing of sentient beings, this is the bondage of wisdom bound by the absence of skillful means." And so on, it is extensively taught. Some say that in the state of the supreme vehicle, one should not meditate on anything, whether it is existence or non-existence, etc. To this I say, that is only saying that in such Madhyamaka, there is no meditation on existence or non-existence. Because in Madhyamaka, there is no distinction between what is the supreme vehicle and what is not the supreme vehicle in any Dharma. Some

Again, some say, "It is like a child giving birth to a child." Therefore, first meditate on non-existence, and then say that you meditate on nothing at all. To this it is replied: It is not said to meditate on non-existence in order to gradually enter the ultimate truth. Rather, in the first stage of meditation, in order to guide the path of the Shravakas and others, it is with the intention of guiding in a flexible way, just like a child giving birth to a child. In this way, these aggregates and so on are merely dharmas, and by meditating on selflessness, the Shravaka person will enter into selflessness. By meditating on the three realms as merely consciousness, in order to proclaim consciousness, one will enter into meaninglessness. In this way, even the non-dual wisdom will enter into selflessness, and therefore, selflessness itself enters into the supreme state. Therefore, saying "like a child giving birth to a child" in that way, for a Madhyamika practitioner, entering the path by meditating on non-existence is impossible in all the sutras and shastras. Some say that the Madhyamika practitioner abandons all extremes and meditates on the middle way, but this is not meditating on the nature of reality as it is, this is very good in the Secret Mantra. To this it is replied: Although the Secret Mantra does not negate, however, the Madhyamika does not abide in the middle way. The Noble Samadhiraja Sutra says: "Existence and non-existence are both extremes, purity and impurity are both extremes, therefore, the wise should abandon both, and not abide in the middle." This is commonly quoted by the Madhyamika teachers in all the Madhyamika treatises. The Noble Nagarjuna also says in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "Those who have minds beyond existence and non-existence, completely transcending and not abiding in them, those profound ones without object, meditate on the meaning of dependent origination." This is said in the commentary: "Those are beyond seeing the mind as existent and non-existent. Because there is no middle way higher than the two extremes, therefore, there is no abiding in it." Acharya Kamalashila also says in the Intermediate Stages of Meditation: "Just as the mind has no edge and middle, so all dharmas should also be understood as having no edge and middle." And, when naming that samadhi, it is said to be non-abiding thought.
