Regarding wrong ideas about the present, and briefly revealing their refutation, this is called the summarizing verses. There are two wrong ideas about meditation: meditation and its signs. The former has two: object of focus and awareness. Regarding the object of focus, some say that now is the time of causes, one should listen and contemplate, one should not meditate. For example, it is like planting seeds on a stone. To this, I say, therefore, one must strive for special causes, so one should meditate. Or, my mind does not want to abide. If one says this, merely this does not want others to be the master. Those with ideas can infer from the statements of credible prior experiences. It is also said in the 《King of Samadhi Sutra》: "In the last five hundred years, those who practice samadhi at that time will not be less than five hundred." Some say that one should only meditate on dharma and the possessor of dharma. To this, I say, that is only understanding impermanence, because one has not understood being free from elaboration, so put it aside for now, it is not a vessel for the profound. Some say that one should only meditate on the characteristic of the nature of dharma. Therefore, clearer and clearer experiences will arise, but there is no clear experience of the general characteristic. Or, there is no contradiction to the aspect. To this, I say, that is only understanding impermanence. Then, it will lead to seeing the truth. That is not possessing qualities. If one says this, therefore do not admit it. It is also said in the scriptures that the general characteristic will also become clearer and clearer. The Tathagata said that hearing the image of the Tathagata and placing it in the mind is like seeing it. Through reason, one can also infer from pure discipline and reliable words. Or, in the 《Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning》, on the characteristic of the general characteristic, the effort of meditation, the state of the nature of accomplishment, one's own characteristic is unreasonable, because it would be too extreme. That sentence says that there is no connection. If one says this, that is not blaming those who assert things exist, because one's own characteristic is established as real, and the general of things is not established as real, these two are different, because meditating on others will lead to obtaining others.

Some say that one should only meditate on the general aspect of meaning. To them I say: What kind of aspect is it? It is merely posited as if nothing is established, and they say that this is the aspect of the nature of reality. That is not the aspect of the nature of reality, because it is elaboration. Some say that the so-called ultimate truth does not exist at all, and that one should only meditate on how dependent origination exists in conventional truth. To them I say: Then why is it called conventional? If they say that it is called conventional because it is not established by reasoning, then the ultimate is also not established, because the mere fact that persons and phenomena are not established by reasoning is not the ultimate truth. Or, reasoning does not intervene at all, and if they say that the selflessness of persons and phenomena is not established at all, then do not even say conventional. You are no different from someone who associates with children and has not heard the Dharma. That does not need to be meditated upon. Thus, it is said in the chapter of the Essence of the Moon: The ultimate truth is the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, and is not common to all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Therefore, no conventional truth can accomplish the supreme accumulation of roots of virtue for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. The Essence of the Moon is like this: for example, no spark can dry up the vast and deep ocean. Likewise, no conventional truth can dry up one's own ocean of afflictions. What need is there to mention other sentient beings? Thus it is said. Some say that the ultimate truth is not meditated upon at all, because the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence taught that the ultimate truth is where there is no movement of mind. Therefore, they do not consider it to be a meditation of the mind. Thus they say. To them I say: Because of the variety, the mind and the object are the mind because of thinking, and because of returning from matter, if the truth of the mind is any essence, then it is not possible to say that it cannot be understood by the appearance of its aspect. Because there is no difference from the object of non-conceptual wisdom, all phenomena appear like the center of the sky. And, the certainty of meaning by the power of reasoning is not deceptive.
