Granted, for example, in the self-empty, perfectly pure mirror mandala, appearances of images are like that, know the trees and phenomena. It is said, "Images do not appear," it is said. Therefore, it is impossible to establish it through direct perception. If you say it is established through inference, that is also unreasonable, because such an example is impossible. If it exists, since the sign is not established by direct perception, the relation is not established by direct perception. Therefore, that also must be established by inference, so there will be the fault of endless examples and endless signs. However, that fault will not occur. In the Ornament of the Middle Way, it says: "The Tirthika king infers, 'It is just the face that is the object there, and the name 'image' is applied.'" And the Vaibhashika says, "Another form arises there." And the Sautrantika says, "Only consciousness appears like that." And by the door of inference, the example is established as without inherent existence, so the example will not become endless, and the ultimate truth is determined in all common examples. If you say that, I say to that: There, when some people's minds have not changed by the limit of previous establishment, although they do not hold it like that, later, after their minds are deceived by the limit of establishment, they say that it is a meaningless face, and only refute that it is not a face that can perform a function, but it is not establishing that the image is without inherent existence in the ultimate truth, so there is no fault of endless signs and examples. Thus, first, considering that it is necessary to refute that it is not a nature that can perform a function, it is said like this, the proposition is: Any consciousness that appears to be different in characteristics from anything is not its object, for example, sound consciousness appears to be different in characteristics from form. The consciousness of images also appears to be different in characteristics from the objects such as faces that abide as they are, so it is pervasive, so it is a contradictory object, and so on. That is refuting that it is not a form that can perform a function, and there it is not said that the image does not exist in the ultimate truth. Secondly, it is said from the perspective of refuting that forms that can perform a function exist simultaneously, it is said like this, the proposition is: Any substantial embodied thing.

Those are the natures that exist by abandoning their respective places, such as vases and so on. These things that are the basis of debate are also embodied, so they are said to be the reason of nature. There, only the co-existence of functional form is prevented, but it is not established that the image has no ultimate nature. In order to clarify the third aspect, it is said: Although the opponent admits that these images and so on exist as substances in the nature of consciousness, they do not consider these images and so on to be examples themselves. So what is it? When recognizing images and so on, what is the nature of appearance. That is because of falsehood, it is only established as an example. It is said like this. There, only the functional form that is falsely established in the external environment is prevented, but it is not established that the image itself has no nature, because it contradicts direct perception. If it is refuted that a damaging measure establishes no self-nature in the ultimate sense, then all those who understand the meaning of words, upon hearing the teachings of valid scriptures, will assume that the image has a true appearance. Therefore, in similar examples, the connection between the ultimate reason and the established ultimate is not established by direct perception and inference, as it is said. If it is not like this, but it is added by negating non-existence, and it is thought that in the conventional truth, the image itself appears to establish a connection, so it is taken as an example, then, in response to this, it is said: Then establishing a connection is meaningless. Because for the dharma to be established, it must be understood that the ultimate reason is to be separated from one and many, and that what is to be established is no self-nature in the ultimate sense, and these two are related. What is inconsistent with this is that in the conventional appearance, only one connection is established, so the ultimate connection has not been determined before, and the conventional has already been established before, so it is establishing what has already been established. Moreover, the dissimilar side of no self-nature in the ultimate sense, adding reason in the conventional truth, will become a contradictory pseudo-reason. If someone says that a connection is established in one conventional truth, then even if it is said a hundred times, the connection is established.
