That which has parts cannot definitely become one. For example, the constituents of a thing are ten particles surrounding one breath's subtle particle; since the part is greater than the whole, it cannot become one. My mind arises and does not cease; from this arise the part of arising, the part of abiding, and the part of ceasing. Therefore, a whole without parts cannot be established. Since a true one is not established, then what is the multitude of many? Therefore, since it is separate from one and many, the mind that arises now is, in ultimate truth, completely without inherent existence, like the sky. Therefore, one should not rely on it, one should not abide in it. Thus it is said, the noble Nāgārjuna said: Just as an instant has an end, so too, discriminate the beginning, middle, and end. Because of the nature of the three instants, the world does not abide for an instant. Thus it is said. Then, one might wonder, does the future exist? That too, because its own essence is not established, and the sign of the result is not established in ultimate truth, therefore in ultimate truth it is completely without inherent existence. Then, one might wonder, does the past mind exist in ultimate truth? If the cause of the past does not exist in ultimate truth, then what would be called past or future? If it were not so, then the son of a widow would also have death, which would be absurd. Therefore, if the mind that arises now is not truly observed, then how can the future and the past, which depend on it, be observed? Thus it is said, in the noble *Ratnakūṭa Sūtra* also it is said: Light-protector, the mind is completely unfindable when sought. That which is unfindable is unobservable. That which is unobservable is neither past, nor future, nor present. In the noble *Ajātaśatru Kaukṛtya Vinodanā Sūtra* also it is said: Then, that emanation being went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head. Then he said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, I have killed my parents, please allow me, Blessed One. What should I do now? Then, the Blessed One gave the word "Good, good" to that emanation being, saying, "Good, good. Young man, you speak truthfully, you speak correctly, you speak as it was done. Because you speak the truth before the Tathāgata, you are not deceptive, young man."

You should realize the cause of mind. With which mind, your past, future, or present, did you kill your parents? The past mind is exhausted, separated, ceased, transformed, not abiding in a place, therefore it cannot be established. The future is what has not yet come, that is unborn. Unarisen, not yet truly arisen, untransformed, not yet completely transformed, without characteristics, unarisen, therefore it also cannot be established. The present mind has no abiding place, arising and immediately decaying and being certain, not becoming an aggregate, not being suppressed. Therefore, for it, there is no going and coming that can be established. O noble son, the mind neither abides in the internal body, nor flows to external objects, nor can it be observed where both are absent. O noble son, the mind is not blue, not yellow, not red, not white, not pale tea-colored, nor the color of crystal. O noble son, the mind is formless, invisible, ungraspable, unimpeded, like an illusion without comparison, therefore it also cannot be established. O noble son, the mind does not crave desire, does not hate, does not become deluded. O noble son, the mind does not accumulate, has no action, no feeling, no thought, no experience. O noble son, the mind is naturally pure, It will not be completely defiled, nor will it be completely purified. O noble son, the mind is neither in this life, nor in another life, nor in the absence of both, it is neither there nor elsewhere, equal to space, unequal yet equal, not different, it will not be completely cognized, therefore the wise should not cling to it, should not consider it as one's own, should not rely on it, should not abide in it, should not think of it as self, should not think of it as belonging to self. O noble sons, all dharmas are naturally powerless. O noble sons, I will not say that for such a believer there will be complete defilement, or complete purification, or falling into a bad rebirth, or rising into a good rebirth. What is the reason for that? Because the nature of mind will not be completely defiled, will not be completely purified, will not go anywhere, will not come, will not stay. Thus it is said.
