Even the slightest movement is difficult to perceive, and no coarse or subtle sensations arise in the body. One abides in equanimity, having mastered the qualities of perfect training. Because one has control over the corresponding winds, it feels as if one is dwelling inside a house, with a predominance of calmness and lightness. There is no sinking, excitement, or indeterminate mind, no small insight, and no small quiescence. Although these are absent, because one has not practiced for a long time, it is like dwelling in a darkness that is not too intense. In such a state, even if one can quickly abide or reach the destination, the power is small. Except for times of adjustment, this mind, which is initially difficult to enter, can forcefully abide for the distance of three arrow-lengths, at a normal walking pace. The intermediate case is that when observing the breath, it is easy to feel slight movements, but one is merely unaware of how the body is situated. The quality of perfect training is that one has control over the body's winds corresponding to samadhi, feeling as if one is dwelling in a white, motionless sound, with moderate calmness and lightness. One can abide only for the distance of two arrow-lengths at a normal walking pace. The other aspects should be understood as before. The inferior case is that one can know how the body is situated by observing it, and there is a slight degree of calmness and lightness. The quality of perfect training is that it is easy to gain control over the winds corresponding to samadhi. When one is inattentive, even when meditating, it feels as if one is walking in a slightly tilted or covered place. One does not feel the breath coming out of the nose and mouth, and even if one releases half of it from the body, one feels very comfortable, calm, and subtle. One can abide only for the distance of one arrow-length at a normal walking pace. The other aspects are as before. The measure of abiding has been explained. So, what are the various appropriate methods to rely on? Judging from one's own capacity, whatever state of mind-abiding arises, whether superior, intermediate, or inferior, one should understand its characteristics. For the time being, be content with that much, and do not strive for too much. Combine one's own abilities with natural power and meditate. If one does not understand the characteristics, the state of mind-abiding will be lost. What is that? Even if a superior state of mind-abiding arises, some people, because they have had similar experiences before, become frightened and interrupt their practice. Those who were previously unable to abide, when striving to make the mind abide, meditate both day and night.

If the body is unwell, someone might say, "Don't meditate at night." If you take this to heart, thinking that if your body is unwell at night, you shouldn't meditate, then you interrupt your practice. Also, you might have been diligently focusing before, but now, even though you don't need to focus so much, you focus even more, and as a result, you don't gain experience. If you experience a middling or inferior state, you tell other friends that you are very proficient. Because of what you've heard, you don't value the differences in foundation, thinking everything is the same, and thinking this is not good, you exert even more effort. The other three situations are the same as before. Therefore, you should understand the degree of meditation as explained before. The fault of not knowing contentment is that some people, even though they understand the characteristics of mind abiding, because of the arrogance of frequently hearing teachings, become very arrogant if they experience a middling or inferior state. Even if they experience a superior state, they think others will do better, and so they overexert themselves, leading to decline. Therefore, if you experience a superior state, you become very arrogant. Even if you experience a middling or inferior state, you should rely on it for a while. If you are too conceited, what faults will there be? Some people, even if they only experience a middling or inferior state, become distracted and don't control themselves while meditating. If they experience a superior state, they become very arrogant, thinking that others are not as good as them, and so they meditate all night, not sleeping. In the morning, they even meditate without eating. They think they won't get sick, and they don't control themselves while meditating. This will lead to extreme physical discomfort and loss of focus. Therefore, you should know that your mind is abiding, avoid these faults, and shorten the number of sessions compared to your previous meditation. One session in the evening and one in the morning, one or two sessions during the day, sometimes three. Do not meditate more than five times in two days and nights. If you can't do that, then according to your ability, two sessions during the day and two sessions at night, for a total of four, or two sessions during the day and one in the evening, for a total of three. Do not meditate more diligently than when it was clear before. The duration of the session should be according to the pace of an ordinary person, either three arrow-lengths away, or two arrow-lengths away, or one arrow-length away, meditating according to your ability. Or one night, or one day, or one week, or two weeks, or three weeks, or four weeks, or five weeks, or ten days, or fifteen days, or twenty days. In short, do as much as you can, and don't make your body uncomfortable. Otherwise, you will naturally feel physically tired, mentally exhausted, or feel bored or weak as soon as you start meditating.
