Or, if the head feels heavy, or if there is dizziness, or if the body trembles, or if sleep is light at night, or if food is not tasty, or if verbal mistakes increase, or if the mind feels empty, etc., meditate until no signs of discomfort arise. After that, if they arise, rest and massage the body. Nourish the body's energy with food and drink that are in accordance with the Dharma. Until the body recovers, meditate day and night, whenever you feel like meditating, in short sessions. Once the energy is strengthened, meditate in longer sessions at dusk and dawn, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, four sessions a day and night. Accumulate merit, heal the body, precede with compassion, and make aspirations, etc., as mentioned before. So, what is the arising of clear perception? Instruct using the methods shown earlier, and then meditate as before. If the initial object, the intermediate object, and the final object are not grasped, even if there are no obstacles, it is necessary to generate clear perception. Therefore, in this way, even for a month, do not meditate too intensely. Also, do some minor tasks that do not contradict the Dharma. Thus, even if there is no free time during the day, meditate in short sessions at dusk and dawn, preceded by aspirations, etc. After that, as in the initial learning method, rely as much as possible on all the resources for calm abiding and insight, and request support from the patrons. In a quiet, pleasant place, etc., the more qualities of the place, the better, and stay with some Dharma friends who have pure discipline and consistent views, making vows together. As it is said, in the "Noble King of Samadhi Sutra": Guard discipline like a precious jewel, always rely on harmonious friends. Again, in the same sutra it says: Meditating on this empty King of Samadhi, it resides on the head of those with pure discipline, if the nature of all dharmas is always equally abiding, then children and ordinary people cannot understand it through diligence. If even actions that are in accordance with the Dharma are abandoned for the time being, what need is there to mention actions that are not in accordance with the Dharma? Therefore, like someone in a burning house desiring cool water, abandon everything and focus solely on this.

One should have faith in that. As it is said, in the sutra itself: With a mind like one whose head and clothes are on fire, one should abandon father, mother, son, daughter, relatives, in-laws, wife, and so forth like fire, and abandon the happiness of royal power like ashes, and go forth and dwell in solitude. Why is that? Because, it is said that it is difficult for a youth like that to attain even the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, let alone such a samadhi. Therefore, one should always take medicine, food, and drink that do not contradict the Dharma, and nourishing medicine for illness, and warm clothes and cushions, etc., to nourish the body. For ten days or half a month, or until one reaches a comfortable state, one should rest and nourish the body, not meditate at night, and only meditate for short periods during the day, to increase strength. Even if one has initially reached a good level, if there is a danger of sudden illness or other obstacles, one should do as before, except for the part from "intermediate object" to "meditate each time," to increase strength. Then, stop meditating for a short time each day, and with the wisdom of thought, think three times a day, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening, until a definite time is established. Thinking thus, from the nature of the mind, because it is said in the Mahayana sutras and treatises that one can realize the nature of all phenomena, I should examine my own mind individually. Think like this. Again, think like this, whatever depends on causes and conditions is certainly impermanent, like the tip of a flame. My mind is also impermanent because it arises under the control and dependence of desire, malice, displeasure, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, doubt, non-effort, effort, and so forth. Therefore, the Blessed One also said: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent. Whatever arises and ceases has momentary parts, like the feeling of suffering. This mind that I have now arisen is also arising and ceasing, so it has component parts. Whatever
