Also, in the teachings of the renowned Vimalakirti Sutra, Manjushri asked: How should a Bodhisattva view sentient beings? Vimalakirti replied: They should be viewed like reflections in a mirror, like hairs on the back of a frog. Having contemplated in this way, rest for a while, maintain the previous posture, and let awareness not dwell on anything. In short, if there is dullness, make it clear; if there is agitation, make it moist; if there is equal entry, maintain equanimity. If the aspect of calm abiding is greater, remember the meaning of insight. If certainty has not arisen from this, follow the traces of the signs, and as soon as uncertainty arises, rest in that. Even if certainty arises, if you examine it, the mind will become agitated like wind in a fire because the aspect of insight is greater, so at that time, gently relax. In that state, if awareness is very clear and does not grasp at anything, then meditate in accordance with your capacity. What is the mind that arises from that? There are two aspects: arising from the mind of wisdom and arising from the mind of skillful means. Among these, if you want to arise from samadhi with the mind of wisdom, then stand up and without changing your posture, think to yourself: All dharmas are unborn from the very beginning, like the sky. Then again, think of them as appearing conventionally. As it is said: In the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: Just as in the sky, a little cloudless space, in an instant, a circle of clouds appears, one should know from where the first arose, likewise, know all dharmas. Among these, arising with the thought of skillful means is: Although in the ultimate truth everything is unborn from the very beginning, in the conventional truth, the mind itself appears in various ways, that is, the forms gathered in the world of sentient beings are like elephants and so on created by illusion. The things gathered in the world of containers are like the appearance of water in a mirage. The nature of objects and enjoyments is like a dream. The nature of the actions of the body is like an optical illusion. The nature of the actions of speech is like an echo. Sentient beings who act in the desire realm are like images. Sentient beings who act in the form and formless realms

are like the moon in water. The pure lands of the Buddhas, etc., are like emanations. Therefore, these illusory beings, with minds turned upside down regarding the existence of these dharmas that are without essence in the ultimate sense, accumulate various karmas due to the causes of afflictions, and wander in samsara for a long time, suffering. I must, in any way, like a magician, accumulate immeasurable collections of merit and wisdom with non-inverted wisdom, attain the wisdom of omniscience, and strive to attain great enlightenment for all beings. Thinking thus in my heart, I join my palms and say: I prostrate with reverence and offer to the Buddhas of the ten directions and their sons. I confess sins before them and rejoice in all merits. I urge those who dwell in the essence of enlightenment to turn the wheel of Dharma. I beseech those who wish to enter nirvana to remain for immeasurable kalpas. May all beings, through this virtue, Abandon the demon of clinging to reality, possess compassion, Ultimately without discrimination, having been fully matured, May they quickly attain great enlightenment alone. After making this aspiration, one rises. So, what is the conduct of rising? One should not be separated from the mind of enlightenment at all times. That is to say, for beginners, not being separated from the mind of enlightenment is necessary for the cause of enlightenment. As it is said, it is stated in the Compendium of Trainings. That is, it is the activities of giving, etc., with emptiness and great compassion as their essence. As it is said, it is also taught in the Holy Dharma Collection Sutra: The Bodhisattva who sees things as they truly are, Great compassion arises for sentient beings. That is, with the thought, 'I shall accomplish this door of samadhi, which sees all dharmas as they truly are, for all sentient beings,' that mind, urged by that great compassion, perfects the trainings of higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom, and manifests unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. So it appears. Also in that same sutra, Blessed One, Bodhisattva
