It should be done as in the previous method. Then, again, with great diligence, let awareness rest without clinging to anything. Among these, the nature of sinking is like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, it is unclear. The cause of this is excessive fatigue from work and thinking of darkness in the mind, as well as hypnotic foods and drinks, and living in a narrow cave, and eating and drinking too much or too little food. To avoid these, one should well and thoroughly grasp the signs that appear from it, and remember them well. Instruct well, and examine them separately. When covered by a mind accompanied by luminosity and radiance, or when walking in an open space without cover, like this: Recalling the Buddha, or the Dharma, or the Sangha, or the precepts, or generosity, or the deities, or with any object that can purify the mind, make the mind correctly praise, make the mind correctly hold, correctly uplift, correctly make it rejoice, or look in the ten directions, or look at the moon, or look at the stars, and the planets and constellations, or wash the face with water, or look at the light of a lamp or a jewel, one will become clear. Or, from the sutra that encourages superior intention, it says: "Whoever delights in drowsiness and sleep, For that person, the great net of ignorance will increase. If that person gains a view, they will become doubtful, For that person, other faults will also increase." Recite these and so forth, and then purify. If one does not like it, one will sink, and the practitioner should also be made clear as before. Then, again, with great diligence, let awareness rest without clinging to anything. A mind that has not been instructed refers to when the mind neither flows outward nor flows inward. It neither engages in virtuous deeds nor engages in non-virtuous deeds, nor engages in insight. It neither holds to calm abiding nor is it oppressed by sleep due to discouragement. It is like the eyes of a man who has just awakened from sleep. The obscured mind is unclear, just like that, at that time the mind runs unclearly. It should also be done as in the previous method of making it clear from sinking, and again let awareness rest without clinging to anything. Among these, the fault of not understanding the nature of calm abiding and insight is that when one is not pleased with the object of focus,

Or, suspecting dullness, one clarifies it. Or, disliking the object of focus, one sees distraction and, viewing it as a fault, pacifies the distraction. Or, from another cause, excitement arises. Or, suspecting excitement, one pacifies it. Or, knowing it to be an untamed mind, one praises it and abides in clarity. At that time, observing with mindfulness, if one sees that awareness is extremely clear and does not grasp at anything, being separate from both dullness and excitement, and being the union of calm abiding and insight, then one should abide without altering it at all. Thus, according to reason, Some people think that the characteristic of calm abiding is one-pointedness, so they wonder what they should hold onto and thus seek an object of focus. Some people think that the characteristic of insight is to discriminate reality correctly, so they discriminate. This is like a person who wants to make a lamp brighter but waves the edge of a cloth, which only extinguishes the lamp and does not make it brighter. Likewise, that person will not attain the path of the union of calm abiding and insight even if they meditate for hundreds of thousands of years. Therefore, the characteristic of insight in equipoise is merely discrimination, and the corresponding characteristic of calm abiding is merely non-movement. Thus, since both are complete in a single instant, one should abide in that state. When, after a while, one thinks, "What is awareness grasping at?" or thinks, "It is becoming dull," or thinks, "It is sinking or falling," or thinks, "It is becoming weak," then the part of calm abiding is greater and the part of insight is smaller. Therefore, at that time, one should generate strength and repeatedly recall how one previously realized the nature of all phenomena, and as soon as certainty arises and it becomes clear, one should immediately abide in it. If certainty still does not arise after doing this, then one should follow any sign and generate the wisdom of thought, and as soon as certainty arises, one should immediately abide in that state. The fault of fatigue there is twofold: physical fatigue and mental fatigue. That is also because of meditating too much, or due to other causes. If the body and mind are uncomfortable, one should slightly change one's posture and focus on the object of focus, thinking, "All sentient beings are conventionally seen as reflections in a mirror." One should think that ultimately they are like a turtle's hair coat. Thus it is said, noble
