Because it is to show that it is not from others, it is said to be "separated from desire." It means abandoning attachment to the five qualities of desire in the desire realm. Here, except for anger, the afflictions such as attachment to the desire realm are referred to as the meaning of the word "desire." If it is abandoned, it is separated from desire. The so-called separation from sinful and unwholesome dharmas means abandoning the parts of hatred characterized by anger, etc., and the actions of beating, killing, etc. of sentient beings arising from their cause. Here, only unwholesome is mentioned. If the word "sinful" is not mentioned, then the word "unwholesome" can also be used for other afflictions of the desire realm, which would be a repetition. Therefore, the word "sinful and unwholesome" is mentioned, because hatred makes one's own and others' continuums unpleasant, so hatred is a great fault, therefore it is called "sinful." The so-called "with conceptualization and with analysis" means conceptualization and analysis. It refers to having conceptualization and analysis that observes the faults and sins of the dharmas of the desire realm, which is a synonym. Thinking roughly and generally is conceptualization. Grasping and thinking carefully is analysis. The so-called "joy and happiness born of solitude," among them, the word solitude refers to abandoning attachment to desire and abandoning sinful and unwholesome dharmas. It is connected with the joy and happiness arising from that, and having entered the first dhyana and abiding there. The words born of solitude show pure and uncontaminated concentration. Pure refers to worldly concentration, thinking that the upper concentration is liberation and the lower concentration is an arrow wound, which is the characteristic of attachment to the taste of concentration and absence of pride. Uncontaminated refers to what is obtained from entering through the door of the four noble truths of the noble ones, which is the characteristic of transcending the world. The word joy refers to mental happiness. The word happiness refers to relaxed happiness. Like this, happiness is called the happiness of mental fitness and the corresponding relaxed happiness, not the happiness of feeling. Said: Then why should this feeling be specifically designated here?

Without distinguishing, generally speaking of "happiness." In response: If it is considered the happiness of feeling, is it the happiness of bodily feeling or the happiness of mental feeling? Like this, at the time of entering into meditative absorption, bodily happiness should not exist, because at the time of meditative equipoise, there is no collection of the five consciousnesses. Mental happiness is also not acceptable, because the word "joy" is mentioned, and joy here refers to the happiness of the mind, because the happiness of the mind is truly existent. If it is considered to refer to mental happiness, then it becomes redundant. If it is said that at that time both happiness and mental happiness exist, then in that case, the substances would simultaneously cease, because it is impossible for two mental events to arise in a single moment. Although two substances cannot arise in a single moment, meditative absorption is the nature of many moments, so initially there is joy, and later happiness arises. If it is said like that, then the explanation of five branches in a single moment of the first dhyana would not be established, so it is not acceptable. Therefore, the word "joy" refers to the happiness of the mind, and the word "happiness" refers to the happiness of relaxation. The so-called "abiding in the first dhyana" means abiding in the first dhyana with one-pointed concentration. In order to show the second dhyana, it is said, "That (the yogi) has pacified discursive thought and analysis," etc. The word "that" refers to the yogi, meaning the yogi. The so-called "discursive thought and analysis are pacified" means being separated from discursive thought and analysis, which is a synonym. If one enters the second dhyana, because one is separated from the disturbance of discursive thought and analysis, it is called "inner clarity and unification of mind." The word "inner" is because they do not focus on external objects, but rather observe the mind internally. The so-called "clarity" means being separated from the defilement of the disturbance of discursive thought and analysis that exists in the first dhyana. Alternatively, the meaning of "clarity" refers to faith, because the yogi of the second dhyana attains the second dhyana, also arising in reliance on the ground of the meditative equipoise of the first dhyana.
