It is called pure mindfulness. The eight defilements are: investigation and analysis, exhalation and inhalation, pleasure and pain, joy and displeasure, these eight. To abide having entered the fourth dhyana means to abide having placed the mind one-pointedly on the fourth dhyana. Objection: If there are other qualities such as faith and diligence in these four dhyanas, why are they not taught as limbs of dhyana? Why are investigation and analysis, etc., taught as limbs? Answer: Because only these fully comprehend the antidote, qualities, and the limbs of the basis, investigation and analysis, etc., are taught as limbs, but even if there are others, they are not regarded as limbs. Among them, from the first dhyana onwards, investigation and analysis are the limbs of the antidote. Because investigating and analyzing the phenomena of the desire realm as thorns and barbs, etc., they become the antidote to desire, malice, and anger, and eliminate them. "The joy and pleasure born of solitude" indicates the limb of rejoicing. Because through investigation and analysis, if desire and anger, etc., are abandoned, one will individually experience the joy and pleasure born of abandoning them. "Abiding having entered the first dhyana" indicates the limbs of both of them. Because by the power of abiding in one-pointedness of mind, investigation and analysis that refute desire arise, and one individually experiences the joy and pleasure born of solitude. In the second dhyana, the unity achieved by a mind that is inwardly utterly clear is the limb of the antidote, that is, by being inwardly utterly clear and the mind becoming one-pointed, the investigation and analysis that exist in the first dhyana, having become the opposing side of the second dhyana, are eliminated. Therefore, since there is no investigation and analysis in the second dhyana, it is called "without investigation, without analysis." The joy and pleasure born of samadhi are the limbs of rejoicing. Because being inwardly clear and becoming one-pointed eliminates investigation and analysis, one can individually experience the joy and pleasure born of samadhi free from investigation and analysis.

It is for the sake of experiencing. It is called entering and abiding in the second dhyana, thereby showing the basic limbs of those two, relying on one-pointedness of mind, in order to separately experience the joy and happiness that arise from inner and becoming one taste, and from samadhi. The three, namely abiding in equanimity in the third dhyana, and mindfulness and clear knowing, are the limbs of the antidote, because they eliminate the joy and happiness of the second dhyana. Seeking bodily pleasure separately is a limb of rejoicing, in that it is shown by example that there is mental pleasure, which is what is called "whatever is noble," and so on. It is called entering and abiding in the third dhyana, thereby showing the basic limbs of those two, placing the mind in one-pointedness, in order to enter into equanimity and mindfulness and clear knowing, and to separately experience bodily pleasure. The pure equanimity and pure mindfulness of the fourth dhyana are the limbs of the antidote, because they eliminate pleasure and suffering, and so on. The feeling that is neither pleasure nor pain is a limb of rejoicing. It is called entering and abiding in the fourth dhyana, which is the basic limb of those two, by the power of one-pointedness of mind, equanimity and mindfulness are purified, and it becomes the experience of a feeling that is neither pleasure nor pain. Here, from the first dhyana down to the sphere of nothingness, one cultivates seven types of attention. What are the seven types of attention? They are the attention of distinguishing characteristics, the attention of increased aspiration, the attention of utter isolation, the attention of gathering joy correctly, the attention of destruction, the attention of ultimate union, and the attention of the fruit of ultimate union. Among these, when entering the first dhyana, the yogi again, with seven types of attention, attains the abandonment of desire for the desire realm. The seven types of attention are the attention of distinguishing characteristics, and so on. The attention of distinguishing characteristics is that, by this, one contemplates the desires of the desire realm as having a coarse characteristic and
