Searching for "afflictions follow" is searching for one's own nature. How to search for the common nature? It means that all these desires are constantly accompanied and connected with the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, and even the suffering of desire not arising. Those who dwell in the enjoyment of desires and possess perfect desires cannot escape the nature of birth and so on, but are only briefly accompanied. Searching in this way is searching for the common nature. How to search for the difference? There are two kinds of difference: from the white side and the black side, these collections of desires belong to the black side, like unclean fire, like virulent poison, like a dream, like a briefly worn ornament, like ripe fruits of a tree. When searching for these desires, sentient beings each experience the suffering of feeling, and even if they obtain them, they will experience the suffering of guarding, the suffering of separation, the suffering of lack of autonomy, and so on. Similarly, relying on these desires, there are five kinds of faults as objects, as the Tathagata has said. These desires are a small taste of pleasure, great suffering, and possess many faults as objects. Even if one relies on them, there is no satisfaction or ultimate limit. Thus it is said, therefore, the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravaka disciples, the noble beings who have entered correctly, rebuke it in various ways. How to search for time? These desires of craving, whether in the past, future, or present time, are always constant, always real, always true. These desires are much harm, much suffering, much damage. Searching in this way is searching for time. How to search with reason? These desires need to be accomplished with great effort, great diligence and labor, and various kinds of severance and various crafts. Such accumulation and effort is also for my body, the coarse body made of the four great elements, which needs to be constantly massaged, washed, and nourished, and is accompanied by fear and has the nature of disintegration, and is only a remedy for eliminating suffering.

Furthermore, food is for eliminating the suffering of hunger. Clothing is for eliminating the suffering of cold and heat, as well as shyness and shame. Bedding is for eliminating the suffering of sleep and fatigue. Riding is for eliminating the suffering of walking and moving. Medicine is for eliminating the suffering of illness. These desire-realm phenomena are merely antidotes to suffering, so one should not develop attachment or clinging to them. Otherwise, one should seek them in the manner of a sick person relying on medicine to alleviate their illness, which is a rational approach. In this way, one recognizes the coarse characteristics of these desire-realm phenomena by seeking the six objects, while one recognizes the peaceful characteristic of the first dhyana. This attention should be understood as being mixed with the wisdom of listening and contemplation. After that, having transcended the wisdom of listening and contemplation, one engages in one-pointed meditation, relying on desire in the desire realm, and cultivating shamatha and vipashyana, focusing on the peaceful characteristic of the first dhyana. In the process of repeated practice, one should develop interest in the coarse and the peaceful. This is called attention with manifest interest. Through continuous habituation with this, initially, attention endowed with the path of abandonment arises, which abandons the form of great afflictions, and is therefore called extremely secluded attention. Having become separated from afflictions that are contrary to this, the yogi then develops joy in abandonment and thoughts praising abandonment, and possesses a small amount of joy and happiness arising from truth. From time to time, he praises and inspires joy in sentient beings with attention that interrupts the mind, such as the fruits of meditation or the qualities of the Tathagata. This is for eliminating the obscurations of drowsiness and excitement, and is therefore called attention that correctly gathers joy. When he has thus correctly entered, due to the correct manifestation of virtuous roots, those beings who are completely entangled by the afflictions of the desire realm, whether walking or staying,
