It is not enough to focus solely on (love) because it pervades without attachment. "Pervading" means expanding with love in one direction. "Cultivating and abiding" means achieving the mind of love and abiding. Just as one abides in one direction, it is also shown that one should focus on two directions, etc. Therefore, it is said, "Likewise in two," etc. The upper direction is the place of the gods of the desire realm, etc. The lower direction is the place of sentient beings in hell, etc. The intermediate direction is the sentient beings who dwell in the four intermediate directions. Just as the nature of love and the characteristics of cultivation are shown, so too, in order to show compassion, etc., in the same way, it is said, "Having compassion," etc., and the meaning of those should be understood as explained before. In some sutras, it says, "Like immeasurable," and its meaning is that it is called immeasurable because it focuses on immeasurable sentient beings. Then, why are the five Brahma abodes and the three Brahma abodes, etc., not mentioned, but only four are mentioned? It is said that because they are the antidotes to the four afflictions and near afflictions, only four are mentioned. The four afflictions and near afflictions are harm, injury, displeasure, and desire, and malice. Among them, for sentient beings with much malice, love becomes the antidote in order to abandon it. For sentient beings with much injury such as beating, compassion becomes the antidote in order to abandon it. For sentient beings with much displeasure, joy becomes the antidote in order to abandon it. For sentient beings with much desire and malice, equanimity becomes the antidote in order to abandon them. Then, if contemplating impurity is also the antidote to desire, then what is the difference between impurity and equanimity becoming the antidote? It is said that contemplating impurity is the antidote to the desire of impure conduct. The antidote to the attachment to parents and relatives is equanimity, and there is a difference. The above shows the characteristics of love, etc. How wonderful! Thinking in the mind, "May these sentient beings have happiness" is love. Alas! These sentient beings are suffering, suffering.

Thinking in the mind, 'May they be separated from suffering,' is compassion. Thinking in the mind, 'May sentient beings who have happiness always have happiness and joy,' is joy. Not generating attachment to friends, nor generating hatred to enemies, but just keeping the mind in equanimity, is equanimity. So, how should beginners meditate on love and so on from the very beginning? Thus, whether oneself has happiness or oneself does not have happiness, if one sees or hears that the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Hearers have attained happiness, one should aspire that sentient beings also have happiness. If that person has great power of afflictions and cannot aspire that all sentient beings have the happiness of oneself and the Buddhas, and especially has hatred for enemies and especially has attachment for friends, then he should divide the side of friends into three types: superior, middling, and inferior. Having divided them in this way, one should aspire that the best friend has those happinesses. Then, if that is accomplished, then to the middling friend. Then, if that is accomplished, then to the worst friend. Then, if one succeeds in focusing only on the equality of the three sides of friends, then one should generally focus on ordinary people. Then, if that is accomplished, one should divide enemies into three types: inferior, middling, and superior, and first aspire that the inferior enemy has happiness. Then to the middling enemy. Then to the superior enemy. Then, when one has equally aspired that both the best friend and the worst enemy have happiness, then gradually one should focus on one's retinue with just a little bit of one's own scope. Then to the city. Then to the royal palace retinue. Then gradually becoming larger and larger, one should pervade the ten directions with love. For others who have all qualities, even if they have a little quality, one does not despise it, and one considers them to have qualities, thus one will quickly attain the samadhi of love. Conversely, when one should take qualities, even those who have cut off the roots of virtue can take qualities, thus abiding in those who have cut off the roots of virtue, one can also see the results of past merit, especially having done virtuous deeds, whoever's
