Faith arises, hence it is called inner and. Combining "becoming one" with "mind" means the mind becomes focused on one object, or the mind is concentrated on one goal. Because all the dhyanas from the second dhyana upwards to the peak of existence downwards are desired to be free from vitarka and vicara, therefore it is said to be "without vitarka and without vicara." Regarding joy and happiness, joy refers to the happiness of the mind, and happiness refers to the happiness of relaxation, as mentioned earlier. Entering and abiding in the second dhyana means placing the mind equally in the second dhyana. To show the third dhyana, it is said, "free from attachment to joy," etc., meaning that person who transcends the second dhyana and enters the third dhyana. Because one is free from attachment to the joy of the mind in the second dhyana, one enters the third dhyana, therefore it is said, "free from attachment to joy," meaning free from attachment to the joy of the mind in the second dhyana. Regarding "abiding in equanimity," there are three types of equanimity: equanimity of feeling, immeasurable equanimity, and equanimity of formation. Among them, equanimity of feeling is the feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful. Immeasurable equanimity is the characteristic of not generating attachment or anger towards sentient beings. Equanimity of formation is the characteristic of effortlessly and naturally engaging with the object to be focused on. Here, it refers to equanimity of formation. How is it understood? Because in the third dhyana, one engages with the object to be focused on effortlessly and naturally, therefore it is said, "abiding in equanimity." "Possessing mindfulness and awareness, separately feeling the happiness of the body," means that when the characteristic corresponding to equanimity is not mentioned, it is mindfulness. Awareness refers to wisdom, meaning the ability to understand the respective characteristics of mindfulness, etc., which belong to the limbs of the third dhyana, without confusion. The body's

In the phrase "individually experiencing happiness," the word "body" here refers to the mental body. Because in these (meditations) there is no collection of the five consciousnesses. Therefore, the happiness of the third dhyana refers to the mind's individual experience. In order to illustrate the example of the mind's individual experience of happiness in the third dhyana, it is mentioned that "those noble ones possess equanimity, mindfulness, and abide in happiness," and so on. Because they are far from the collection of afflictions or the practice of sinful and unwholesome dharmas, they are noble ones, such as the Tathagatas and Shravakas. Those noble ones also possess equanimity, mindfulness, and abide in happiness. It is said that this is precisely the third dhyana. As it is said, focus the mind on that third dhyana, focus on one point and abide. In order to explain the fourth dhyana, it is said, "They abandon pleasure, abandon suffering," and so on. Happiness is the characteristic of the body's coolness. Suffering is also the characteristic of causing pain to this body. Because these are not present in the fourth dhyana, it is called abandonment. Previously, when the mind's pleasure and displeasure disappeared, from the very attainment of the first dhyana, the mind abandoned both coolness and pain, so it was previously called the mind's pleasure and displeasure. When the second dhyana is attained, pleasure is abandoned. When the third dhyana is attained, the mind's displeasure is abandoned. When the fourth dhyana is attained, the mind's feeling of pleasure is also absent. "Neither suffering nor pleasure," this phrase should be understood as possessing a feeling that is neither pleasure nor suffering. Because when the fourth dhyana is attained, there are no feelings of pleasure and suffering, and so on. In this way, because absorption without feeling is also impossible, it should be understood as possessing equanimity. The word "pure" is combined with the last two words mentioned, namely pure equanimity and pure mindfulness. The word "equanimity" here refers to the equanimity of formations. The word "mindfulness" refers to not forgetting the dharmas that belong to the limbs of the fourth dhyana. Having abandoned the eight faults of the lower grounds, possessing pure equanimity and
