It has power over being inseparable from the wise, because under the influence of the wise, the root of being inseparable from the wise arises. The root of being inseparable from the wise has power over transcendence of suffering, because without complete liberation of the mind, transcendence of suffering cannot be attained. Alternatively, for those who have abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, it has power over the root called "the unknown to be known," because by its power, the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing are abandoned. For those who have abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, it has power over the root of the wise, because by its strength, the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation are eliminated. In order to abide in bliss in the present dharma, it has power over the root of being inseparable from the wise, because in the state of an Arhat, there is nothing else to do other than to individually experience the bliss of liberation. Why are twenty-two roots taught, neither more nor less? Answer: Because of the support of the mind, the discrimination therein, the dwelling, the complete defilement, the collection of purification, and the dharma of purification, only twenty-two roots are taught. Among them, the support of the mind is the six roots from the eye root to the mind root. The discrimination therein is the two roots of female and male, because through the gateway of these two roots, one can discriminate this is male, this is female. The life root causes it to abide. The five roots, beginning with life, cause complete defilement. The five roots, beginning with faith, are the collection of purification, etc. The three roots, such as the unknown to be known, are the nature of purification. Alternatively, for the sake of the support of entering, birth, abiding, universal enjoyment, and the support of cessation, birth, abiding, and universal enjoyment, only twenty-two roots are taught, neither more nor less. Among them, the support of entering into samsara or entering into an object is the six roots from the eye root to the mind root. That which causes birth is the two roots of male and female, because beings are born from these two roots. The dwelling is the feeling root, because by its strength, it abides.

Complete enjoyment is the five, such as suffering. The faculty of suffering and displeasure experiences the suffering of feeling. The faculty of pleasure and delight experiences the pleasure of feeling. The faculty of equanimity experiences feelings that are neither pleasure nor suffering. The cause of turning away from samsara is the five faculties such as faith. The cause of turning away from birth is the faculty of not knowing, by its power one turns away from the three realms. Abiding is the faculty of knowing, at that time one abides on the path of meditating on the characteristic of turning away from samsara. Complete enjoyment is the faculty that is not separated from consciousness, at that time one individually experiences the bliss of liberation. The twenty-two faculties have been explained. After explaining the twenty-two faculties, meditation is taught. Therefore, wanting to explain meditation in the same way, the question is asked, "What are the four meditations?" What is the meaning of meditation? Because one meditates and contemplates with it, meditation means to know thoroughly. In reality, keeping the mind in equanimity and focusing on one point is meditation. How does keeping the mind in equanimity manifest as knowing thoroughly? In this way, from keeping the mind in equanimity, one knows things as they truly are. Therefore, the meaning of the word meditation refers to the mind, but here the mind should be understood as wisdom, because that is the way of the Buddha's philosophical system. This is what is being taught: focusing the mind on virtuous things is the meaning of meditation. In order to teach the first meditation, it is said, "O monks, etc." Here, "this" means "here," referring to the person who dwells in this desire realm. "O monks, etc." is a call and an instruction. A monk means a monk who enters the first meditation. That first meditation is also of the nature of being free from desire for the desire realm, therefore, from the very cause of being free from desire for the desire realm.
