Those who have faith in the power of mindfulness arise from the three realms through the power of mindfulness, relying on the four applications of mindfulness. Those who have faith in the power of samadhi arise from the three realms through the power of samadhi, relying on the four dhyanas. Those who have faith in the power of wisdom arise from the three realms through wisdom, relying on knowing the four noble truths. Therefore, the five powers are also taught. Why are the five powers arranged in that order? It is said that the seed of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment is the power of faith. Therefore, the power of faith is placed first. For example, just as those who believe that digging a well will produce water begin to work to dig the well, so too, seeing the faults of samsara and having faith in the virtues of nirvana, one initiates diligence in order to realize nirvana. Therefore, the power of diligence is shown after that. Those who have initiated diligence cannot lose mindfulness. Therefore, after that is the power of mindfulness. If mindfulness is not lost, the mind will always become one-pointed. Therefore, after that, the power of samadhi is shown. If the mind is not distracted and becomes one-pointed, one will realize nirvana. Therefore, the power of wisdom is taught last. Alternatively, having faith in the four noble truths is the power of faith. Initiating practice in order to realize the truths is the power of diligence. Those who possess diligence do not forget the characteristics of the four truths, which is the power of mindfulness. Meditating one-pointedly on the four truths is the power of samadhi. Having realized the four truths is the power of wisdom. Alternatively, a king who possesses five qualities can defeat the armies of other kings. These five qualities are: a wise minister, a secure dwelling and land, sharp armor and weapons, and unwavering attendants. Similarly, a yogi who possesses five qualities can defeat the armies of afflictions. Among them, having the power of wisdom like a minister and sam

The place of abiding, and the place of reliance, and possessing the armor of not forgetting, and possessing the sharp weapon of steadfast diligence, and possessing the retinue of unwavering faith. Among these, when explaining the three roots of knowing the unknown, the root of knowing, and the root of not being separated from knowing, whatever is in the path of seeing, namely mind, joy of mind, equanimity, faith, diligence, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom, these nine things are established as the root of knowing the unknown. Why is that? Because in the path of seeing, the four truths, which were previously completely unknown, are known, touched, understood, and strived for realization by these nine things. Therefore, the root of that person is established as the root of knowing the unknown. These nine things, when in the stage of the path of meditation, are designated as the root of knowing. Why is that? Because in the path of meditation, the four truths, which were previously completely unknown, are known, understood, comprehended, and strived for realization by these nine things. Therefore, the root of that person is established as the root of knowing. These nine things, when in the stage of the path of meditation, are designated as the root of knowing. Why is that? Because in the path of meditation, there is no seeing what was not seen before, but rather to completely abandon the latent tendencies that are to be abandoned by meditation. The four noble truths known in the path of seeing are repeatedly practiced and known, therefore, the nine roots of the person on the path of meditation are designated as the root of knowing. These nine things, when in the stage of the path of no more learning, are called the root of not being separated from knowing. Why is that? Because in the path of no more learning, one understands "I have completely known the four truths," and possesses the wisdom of reasoning, therefore it is called the root of not being separated from knowing. Or, because it has the nature of completely protecting and operating all knowable things, it is the root of not being separated from knowing. Why is that? Because in the path of no more learning, one obtains the knowledge of exhaustion and the knowledge of non-arising, therefore one knows my suffering, and thus knows again.
