The subtle particles of the eye faculty exist like a blossoming barley flower within the cloudiness of the eye. The subtle particles of the ear faculty exist within the ear, like a tightly twisted knot of barley. The subtle particles of the nose faculty exist straight within the nostril, like an iron hook. The subtle particles of the tongue faculty exist like a crescent moon. The subtle particles of the body faculty exist pervading the body in a straight manner. The mind faculty is not characterized by an accumulation of subtle particles, but rather by the characteristic of knowing all phenomena. The subtle particles of the female faculty exist in the secret place, like the face of a drum or like searching for a silk-cotton tree. The subtle particles of the male faculty exist like a finger in the surrounding area. The life faculty is that which maintains the existence of similar aggregates and prevents them from decaying. Some say that the continuous existence of the aggregates is the life faculty. Others say that the life faculty is that which has power over the existence of the great elements endowed with warmth and consciousness. Why are five faculties explained, from the faculty of suffering to the faculty of equanimity? It is because these five faculties are the opposing factors to meditative absorption and equipoise. Since there are five kinds of opposing factors, the five, beginning with the faculty of suffering, are explained. Among these, the first dhyana destroys the faculty of mental discomfort. The second dhyana destroys the faculty of suffering. The third dhyana destroys the faculty of happiness. The fourth dhyana destroys the faculty of joy and abides in the purified faculty of equanimity. Among these, in the desire realm, there are five kinds of consciousness: the eye, ear, and body consciousness of the first dhyana. Whatever pleasant feeling arises from those aggregates of consciousness is called the faculty of happiness. The mental pleasantness of the third dhyana is also called the faculty of happiness. The non-pleasantness of the aggregates of the five consciousnesses is the faculty of suffering. This exists only in the desire realm and not in other realms. Why is that? Because in the form and formless realms,

Because there is no maturation of non-virtuous actions. The feeling of mental pleasantness is the mental pleasure faculty, which exists in the desire realm, the first dhyana, and the second dhyana. The equanimity faculty exists in all realms of desire, form, and formlessness. Alternatively, the three types of feelings—pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain—are established as five faculties through the different bases of body and mind. When the feeling of pleasure arises from the body and is related to the body, it is called the pleasure faculty. When the same feeling of pleasure is related to the mind, it is called the mental pleasure faculty. Similarly, when the feeling of pain is related to the body and arises from the body, it is called the pain faculty. When the same feeling of pain is related to the mind, it is called the displeasure faculty. That which is related to both body and mind, and does not discriminate between pleasure and pain, is the equanimity faculty. Alternatively, relying on the basis of the five faculties, focusing on an undesirable object, without discrimination, and being in accordance with the aggregate of the five consciousnesses, is the pain faculty. Relying on the mental faculty, focusing on an undesirable object, accompanied by discrimination, and being in accordance with the mental consciousness, is the displeasure faculty. Relying on the five faculties, focusing on a desirable object, and being in accordance with the aggregate of the five consciousnesses, is the pleasure faculty. Relying on the mental faculty, focusing on a desirable object, accompanied by discrimination, and being in accordance with the mental consciousness, is the mental pleasure faculty. Relying on the six faculties, focusing on an object that is neither desirable nor undesirable, and being in accordance with the six consciousnesses, both without and with discrimination, is called the equanimity faculty. Alternatively, experiencing the matured result of non-meritorious formations is the pain faculty and the displeasure faculty. Experiencing the matured result of meritorious formations is the pleasure faculty and
