is the faculty of joy. Experiencing the ripening of the fruit of unwavering action is the faculty of equanimity. Alternatively, when the nature of harming the body, senses, mind, and intellect arises, it is also suffering. When it abides, it is also suffering. When it is completely transformed, it brings happiness, which is called the faculty of suffering and the faculty of displeasure. When the nature of benefiting the body, senses, intellect, and mind subsequently arises, it is also happiness. When it abides, it is also happiness. When it completely changes, it brings suffering, which is called the faculty of happiness. For the body, senses, intellect, and mind, it neither harms nor benefits, and if knowledge has not arisen, it is suffering. If wisdom arises, it is happiness. Such absence is the faculty of equanimity. Alternatively, what is connected with the suffering of suffering is called the faculty of suffering and the faculty of displeasure. What is connected with the suffering of change is called the faculty of happiness and the faculty of joy. What is connected with the suffering of conditioning is the faculty of equanimity. Alternatively, the faculty of suffering and the faculty of displeasure cause the craving not to encounter and the craving to desire separation. The faculty of happiness and the faculty of joy cause the craving for desire and the craving to desire encounter. The faculty of equanimity causes the craving of universal delusion. Alternatively, the bodily feeling accompanied by harm is the faculty of suffering. The mental feeling accompanied by harm is the faculty of displeasure. The bodily feeling without harm is the faculty of happiness. The mental feeling without harm is the faculty of joy. What is contrary to both is the faculty of equanimity. Alternatively, born from the disturbance of the elements, or born from harm done by oneself or others, or experiencing suffering at the time of death, or abiding in an uncomfortable conduct, that is, the bodily feeling separated from the taste of happiness is the faculty of suffering. Meeting with the unpleasant and separating from the pleasant, as well as sadness, pride, fear, and contempt, and various discriminations such as being cut off.

The mental feeling of discomfort arising from (unpleasantness) is the faculty of displeasure. The physical feeling with taste, arising from the harmony of elements, or from subduing suffering with the antidote to suffering, or from dwelling in comfortable conduct, or from physical relaxation, is the faculty of pleasure. The mental feeling with taste, arising from encountering pleasant objects, being distant from unpleasant objects, or from discriminating virtues such as fame and praise, is the faculty of pleasure. The mental feeling on the body that is neither beneficial nor harmful to body and mind, neither pleasant nor painful, is the indeterminate faculty of equanimity. Why are the five faculties, such as faith, taught as five, and not as six or four, etc.? It is said: Because there are five opposing forces, faith, etc., are taught as five, and not as six or four, etc. The five opposing forces are: disbelief, laziness, non-remembrance, distraction, and ignorance. Among these, the antidote to disbelief is the faculty of faith. The antidote to laziness is the faculty of diligence. The antidote to non-remembrance is the faculty of mindfulness. The antidote to distraction is the faculty of concentration. The antidote to ignorance is the faculty of wisdom. Alternatively, the five faculties are taught because of the five kinds of faith. The five kinds of faith are: some have faith in the door of faith, such as the noble Barkala. Some have faith in the door of diligence, such as the noble Thösna Rawa. Some have faith in the door of mindfulness, such as the noble Mingchen. Some have faith in the door of tranquility, such as the noble Rewata. Some have faith in the door of wisdom, such as the noble Shariputra. Among these, those who have faith in the door of faith arise from the three realms by relying on the faculty of faith, and they rely on those who arise from the four limbs of entering the stream. Those who have faith in the faculty of diligence arise from the three realms of diligence by relying on the four right abandonments. Those who have faith in the faculty of mindfulness
