Sa. Now, the wrong livelihood will be explained. It is classified into two types: the wrong livelihood of a monk and the wrong livelihood of a layperson. In order to explain the wrong livelihood of a monk, it is said, "Monks, possessing hypocrisy," and so on. Hypocrisy, flattery, indirect solicitation, intimidation, and desiring gain through gain are the wrong livelihoods of a monk. The wrong livelihood of a layperson will be explained later. In order to explain hypocrisy, it is said, "What is hypocrisy?" and so on. Hypocrisy is also of three types: improper conduct, dwelling in solitary places and showing contentment with few possessions, and using inferior things and not enjoying good things. Among these, improper conduct refers to holding onto the conduct of meditative absorption with the mind that others have qualities, due to attachment to gain and respect. Dwelling in solitary places and showing contentment with few possessions refers to residing in solitary places such as cemeteries or monasteries with the mind attached to gain and respect, and not holding many possessions such as alms bowls. Using inferior things and not enjoying good things refers to showing the use of coarse food and robes, etc., and not enjoying good food and robes, etc. Here, too, attachment to gain and respect, etc., should be added. Thus, among the three types of hypocrisy, in this sutra, in order to explain the hypocrisy of improper conduct and dwelling in solitary places and showing contentment with few possessions, it is said, "Monks, if you see a benefactor," etc., that is, due to attachment to gain and respect, thinking, "May gain and respect be accomplished for me," when a monk sees a benefactor, or sits in the lotus position on the road or in an empty village, and the benefactors also think, "This monk is a meditator, an Arhat, and is worthy of gain and respect," adorning conduct with such a mind is called hypocrisy. Sitting in the lotus position refers to the posture of past practice.

It is a synonym for action. Acquisition refers to the alms bowl and clothing, etc. Reverence refers to the actions of joining palms and prostrating, etc. Saying "Come to me" means thinking, "May it be accomplished in me." The word "etc." also includes relying on evil and good deeds, and pretending not to rely on them. In order to show flattery, it is said, "What is flattery?" and so on. That is, because of thinking about profit and reverence, they speak those pleasing words, speak of their own merits, and speak of the Dharma. Because of thinking about profit and reverence, speaking those pleasing words is because of attachment to profit and reverence, saying things like "You are the father, you are the mother." Speaking of one's own merits is saying, "I am endowed with faith, endowed with learning, endowed with discipline," and so on. Speaking of the Dharma, and being attached to profit and reverence, they explain the scriptures of the Tathagata to others. Here, in order to show the dominance of those pleasing words, it is said, "You are my father, you are my mother," and so on. Similarly, other pleasant words refer to "You are my master, you are my Khenpo, you are my teacher," and so on. The word "etc." also includes speaking of one's own merits and speaking of the Dharma. In order to show deception, it is said, "What is deception?" and so on. That is, because of thinking about acquisition, they show things that harm the body, show things of poverty, and express the desired things in words. Showing things that harm the body refers to showing that one's own body is threatened by wounds and scabies, etc., and threatened by cold and heat, with a mind attached to acquiring robes and food, etc. Showing things of poverty refers to showing that one does not possess robes and alms bowls, etc., and that one looks like one does not have them. Expressing the desired things in words refers to saying, "I only lack such a thing," and then saying, "Such sacred objects as robes can only be obtained from the homes of these virtuous patrons, and cannot be obtained from others," thus speaking, Sutra
