Therefore, through the path of liberation, the characteristic of being free from afflictions is generated, in order to abide in the state of Nirvana. For example, a precious wheel sometimes rises upwards, and sometimes falls downwards. Similarly, when repeatedly focusing on the immediate path, when focusing on the immediate path of the desire realm, it is descending; when abiding in the path of liberation, it is ascending. Similarly, if the immediate path of the form and formless realms is manifested, is it descending? When abiding in the path of liberation, it is ascending. The same applies to the truth of origination and so on. Alternatively, if one focuses on the truth of suffering of the desire realm, it is descending; if one focuses on the truth of suffering of the form and formless realms, it is ascending; the same applies to the remaining truths as appropriate. Question: Why is it called the Dharma wheel in the path of seeing? How is it shown to be a wheel? Answer: This can also be shown by the scriptures. The scriptures say that the noble Ajnata Kaundinya saw the truth. Then, the Blessed One said: Kaundinya, have you seen the truth? He replied: Blessed One, I have seen it. Kaundinya, have you realized the truth? He replied: Blessed One, I have realized it. Therefore, because he knows all the truths, he is known as Ajnata Kaundinya. When the noble Kaundinya saw the truth, it was said that the Dharma wheel was turned. Therefore, the path of seeing is called the Dharma wheel. Furthermore, the monk Ajnata Kaundinya also explains it this way: The limb of the noble path, the nature of the path of seeing, is called the Dharma wheel, similar to the analogy of view, spokes, and rim. Among them, right speech, action, and livelihood are the aggregate of morality, like the hub of a wheel. Just as the hub of a wheel forms the shape of spokes, other qualities such as right view also depend on morality, and their essence is morality. Right concentration is like the rim, just as the wheel

Just as the spokes of a wheel do not scatter but gather together, so too, correct samadhi gathers all the scattering of the mind. The four, namely correct view, thought, mindfulness, and effort, are like spokes because they have the nature of scattering. Therefore, the venerable Kaundinya, in order to generate the path of seeing, turned the wheel of Dharma, so the path of seeing is known as the wheel of Dharma. Among them, correct speech, action, and livelihood belong to the aggregate of discipline, and they cut off the root of anger, which is unwholesome. Correct samadhi, thought, and effort belong to the aggregate of samadhi, and they cut off the root of desire, which is unwholesome. Having correct view and mindfulness belongs to the aggregate of wisdom, and it cuts off the root of ignorance, which is unwholesome, so some teachers say. The meaning of the eight limbs of the noble path will be explained in detail in the sutra itself below, so only a brief explanation will be given here. As for what is called correct view, "correct" means non-perverted. "View" means seeing, and seeing internal and external phenomena such as impermanence without perversion is correct view. Or, "correct" means reality, and "view" means thought, and thinking about the reality of the four truths is correct view. Or, "correct" means auspicious, praiseworthy, or virtuous, and "view" means making clear, and making clear what is auspicious or virtuous is correct view. As for what is called correct thought, "correct" means the arising of what has not arisen before, and "thought" means fear, that is, fearing "this is good, this is not good," and the arising of such fear that has not arisen before is correct thought. Or, "correct" means equal or conforming, and "thought" means thinking accordingly, and thinking in accordance with what is seen by correct view is correct thought. As for what is called correct speech, first, having correctly taken vows of discipline, etc., then, as promised, not doing sinful and unwholesome deeds.

Not breaking vows is correct speech. There are two types of correct speech: non-expressive and expressive. Among them, non-expressive refers to lying and harsh language, etc. Expressive refers to speaking at the right time, speaking correctly, and speaking truthfully. Correct livelihood means that any physical actions are not diminished, and one must observe and not engage in actions such as killing and stealing. Correct living means living according to the Dharma, which is correct living. There are two types of correct living: the pure living of householders and the pure living of renunciants. The pure living of householders means refraining from fire, weapons, poison, alcohol, and so on. The pure living of renunciants means reducing possessions, being content with little, and not engaging in hypocritical behavior, etc. Correct effort means that the physical and mental diligence to prevent unwholesome and sinful things from arising, to abandon those that have arisen, to generate wholesome things that have not arisen, and to increase those that have arisen is correct effort. Correct mindfulness means not forgetting in the mind what has been heard and contemplated before, which is correct mindfulness. Mindfulness arises from three causes: habituation, seeing signs, and mental joy. Among them, habituation means repeatedly looking at forms and other things, and even if there are no forms or other things, memories will arise in the mind later, just as one sees in dreams what one is accustomed to during the day. Seeing signs means that memories arise from seeing similar and dissimilar things, such as remembering a son when seeing someone who looks like a son, or remembering fire when threatened by cold wind. Mental joy is like the reflection of a face in clear water; when the mind is clear and there is little obscuration, one can remember everything that was done before. Correct concentration means that correct refers to uprightness, and concentration refers to transformation or holding, like a snake in a bamboo tube.
