The third is because it is the nature of compassion for countless sufferings. The object is because it is directed towards sentient beings in all realms of existence, from one realm, two realms, three realms. The ground is because great compassion belongs to the ground of the fourth dhyana. The continuum is because the compassion of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas abides in the continuum, while great compassion abides in the continuum of the Tathagatas. Freedom from desire is that the compassion of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only abandons the desire of the desire realm. The great compassion of the Tathagatas, however, is because it is free from all the desires of the three realms. Protecting and not protecting is that the compassion of the Shravakas only protects some sentient beings, but does not protect all sentient beings. The great compassion of the Tathagatas, however, is because they protect all sentient beings. The meaning of "abandoning the plague of suffering and asking about the Dharma" is that the eight sufferings themselves are harmful to body and mind, like a plague, so it is the plague of suffering. In order to abandon it, one asks about the Four Noble Truths and so on. "Among them, it is shown that all four are the origin" means that in order to abandon the plague of suffering, for those virtuous people who ask about the Dharma, the cause of suffering, namely the nature of karma and afflictions, is the truth of origin, which is specifically pointed out and shown as the karma and afflictions themselves that are spoken of in other Sutras. What is its medicine? Therefore, it is said "the Noble Eightfold Path" and so on, the eight limbs of the Noble Path itself are the medicine that abandons karma and afflictions. Because this path abandons afflictions, it is peaceful. Because it abandons the aggregates of suffering, it is Nirvana. "The supreme of peace is attained" means that because all karma and afflictions are abandoned, and one is free from all sufferings such as birth and old age, and it becomes supreme for all the happiness of the world, therefore it is said that the supreme of peace is attained. Above the Four Noble Truths,

In order to conclude what has been said above, (the Buddha) said, "Monks, these are the Four Noble Truths." In order to explain what those eight branches of the Noble Path are, which were mentioned only in number, it was said, "What are the eight branches of the Noble Path?" Why are only the eight branches of the Noble Path taught, and not nine or seven, etc.? The answer is that because they can be summarized into three aggregates, the eight branches of the Noble Path are neither too many nor too few. These three aggregates are: the aggregate of discipline, the aggregate of concentration, and the aggregate of wisdom. Among them, right speech, right action, and right livelihood, because they are the nature of discipline, are included in the aggregate of discipline. Right mindfulness and right concentration are included in the aggregate of concentration. Although mindfulness itself is not the nature of concentration, because a distracted mind cannot remain focused on one point, mindfulness is in accordance with concentration, and therefore belongs to the aggregate of concentration. Right view, right thought, and right effort are included in the aggregate of wisdom. Although right thought and right effort are by nature conceptualization and diligence, and are not inherently the nature of wisdom, wisdom arises from the cause of non-perverted thought and the diligence of performing virtuous deeds, so as their companion, they belong to the aggregate of wisdom. Alternatively, these eight branches of the Noble Path generate eight qualities, so the eight branches of the path are also eight, neither too many nor too few. The eight qualities are: obtaining a mind that is completely pure, extremely white, without faults, free from afflictions, gentle, workable, abiding, and unmoving. Among them, being free from attachment to obtaining Dharma robes, etc., is a mind that is completely pure. Being free from attachment to respectful offerings such as prostrations is extreme whiteness. Not being attached to dwelling and not being flattering is being without faults. Abandoning craving is being free from afflictions. Abandoning views
