Therefore, the sutra says, "Whatever has rebirth, is called existence," and so on. "Whatever that" refers to the noble Arhat who has abandoned all defilements. The complete abandonment of that which has rebirth, such as craving, is the Truth of Cessation. Someone asks: What is the difference between the terms "completely abandoned" and so on? Answer: These are different names for Nirvana. Although there is no difference, these names are established according to the different objects to be tamed. "Completely abandoned" means that the noble path has abandoned craving and attained the fruit of liberation from craving. Therefore, the Blessed One also said, "Whatever is abandoned by the noble path is truly abandoned." The abandonment by the worldly path does not attain the fruit of liberation, therefore, it is not completely abandoned for later arising. "Individually abandoned" means that all attainment of defilements is made to disappear, meaning that the dormant tendencies of defilements are abandoned. "Destruction" means that the attainment of defilements is abandoned, the cycle of rebirth ends, and one no longer possesses the Dharma of rebirth. "Extinction" means that defilements other than desire, such as anger, pride, ignorance, etc., are abandoned. "Freedom from desire" means that all desire is completely abandoned, making it disappear. "Cessation" means that the nature of the five aggregates of clinging and outflows is abandoned, making it disappear. "Pacification" means that all suffering such as birth and old age is made to disappear. "Extinguishment" means that the continuity of connection from one life to another is cut off, and this is called the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering. Alternatively, the abandonment of all dormant tendencies of defilements in the desire realm is called "completely abandoned." The abandonment of all dormant tendencies of defilements in the form realm is called "individually abandoned." The complete abandonment of the dormant tendencies of defilements in the formless realm is called "destruction." The defilements that have been abandoned do not arise again, which is called "extinction." No longer clinging to or being attached to the objects of the three realms is called "freedom from desire." The present

Therefore, the aggregates that are taken up are also abandoned, which is called "cessation." Abandoning the aggregates that are taken up is called "peace." Because future aggregates do not arise, it is called "disappearance." Or, the so-called "complete abandonment" is just a summary statement, and the remaining words such as "separate abandonment" are explanations of it. Because the latent tendencies of craving are abandoned, it is "separate abandonment." Because the latent tendencies are abandoned, afflictions no longer manifest, and there is no activity, so it is "destruction," therefore it is called "exhaustion." Because all afflicted things are seen as faults, it is "freedom from attachment." Because the continuous arising of afflictions is cut off, it is "cessation." Because the nature of liberation is attained, it is "peace." Because of being free from self-grasping, it is "disappearance." Or, "complete abandonment" is just a summary statement, and the remaining words are also explanations of it. How is it "complete abandonment"? Because of having "separate abandonment" and so on, it is "complete abandonment." Those activities that are entangled by afflictions and manifest no longer arise, and those that have arisen are also abandoned, so it is "separate abandonment." The latent tendencies of afflictions are uprooted, so that there is not even a little bit, so it is "destruction." This is also the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. Through the two kinds of antidotes, it is established as two kinds: "exhaustion" and "freedom from attachment." Abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing is called "exhaustion." Abandoning the afflictions to be cultivated by the path of cultivation, thereby being free from all attachment to the three realms, is called "freedom from attachment." In this way, by abandoning the afflictions of the path of seeing and the path of cultivation, the continuous arising of the five aggregates in the future is cut off, so it is called "cessation." When the nature of reality is seen, all things that harm the mind, such as discomfort, no longer arise, so it is "peace." The aggregates propelled by the force of previous lives, which are the basis of various sufferings, also disappear, so it is "disappearance." In order to explain the truth of the path, (the Buddha) said, "What is the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering?" and so on. Regarding this, the cessation of the eight sufferings mentioned above is suffering.
