Oh! The suffering of encountering unpleasant aggregates is encountering the unloved. The suffering of separation from pleasant aggregates is separation from the beloved. The suffering of not encountering desired aggregates is not obtaining what one desires despite effort. Why are the five aggregates of grasping called suffering? It is said that as long as the five aggregates produced by karma and afflictions are in the mind, there is birth, aging, sickness, death, separation from loved ones, encountering the unloved, not obtaining what one desires despite effort, sorrow, lamentation, discomfort, disturbance, and so on. The five aggregates of grasping are called suffering. Objection: The Bhagavan has taught that there are three kinds of feelings: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither pleasant nor painful feeling. If the aggregates of pleasant feeling and neither pleasant nor painful feeling are not of the nature of suffering, why is it said here in summary that the five aggregates of grasping are suffering? Answer: Because the three kinds of suffering pervade all conditioned phenomena, all aggregates of grasping are said to be suffering. The aggregates of feeling associated with suffering are pervaded by the suffering of suffering. The aggregates of feeling associated with pleasure are pervaded by the suffering of change. The aggregates of feeling that are neither pleasant nor unpleasant are pervaded by the suffering of conditioning, because they are produced by causes and conditions and are of the nature of impermanence. Alternatively, just as a bean paste filling is called bean paste even if there is a little mung bean inside, these aggregates are called suffering because, although there is a little pleasure in them, there is much suffering. Furthermore, what wise person would consider a fruit to be pleasant just because mustard oil alleviates the great suffering arising from consequences, and there is only a little pleasure? Similarly, the five aggregates are aggregates of suffering, and even if there is a little pleasure, what wise person would regard them as pleasure? In other sutras, three kinds of suffering are taught, but here, eight kinds of suffering are spoken of.

Then, is it to be seen that the three include the eight, or that the eight include the three? It is said that the three are seen to include the eight, that is, the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, and the suffering of encountering the unpleasant, all of these are included in the suffering of suffering. The suffering of separation from the pleasant, and the suffering of seeking desires but not finding them, are included in the suffering of change. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering, and this is the explanation of the suffering of conditioning. In order to explain the truth of the origin, it is said, "What is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?" and so on. Why is the truth of the origin explained after the truth of suffering? Because for those who do not understand the law of the fruit of samsara, the truth of suffering is first explained, and then in order to explain the cause to those who do not understand the cause, the truth of the origin is explained after the suffering. Or, these worldly beings are tightly bound by the strong bonds of existence, and have not been liberated from the prison of samsara, so in order to explain the cause of the prison of samsara, the truth of the origin is explained after suffering. From what aggregate of craving does the aggregate of suffering arise and come into being? The nature of craving, which is characterized by desire, is called the origin of suffering, which means the cause of suffering. Have the noble ones understood that this craving is the cause of suffering? Or, having understood that craving is the cause of suffering, one becomes a noble one. And this craving is the cause of suffering, and in order to understand it without error and without inversion, it is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering. Then, what is this craving? Therefore, it is said that whatever craving has the nature of arising, is endowed with pure desire, and delights in it. For example, a person who is tormented by extreme thirst at noon in the spring, and desires water, but is never satisfied even if he constantly drinks hot water. Similarly, those who have desire and attachment regard the body and possessions as virtues, and therefore constantly seek existence.
