Those who see even small things as frightening, because that fault causes the mind to suffer. Why is encountering the unpleasant considered suffering? This is like an untamed neighbor, always causing harm, and like an untamed being, becoming a place where hatred arises, and a cause for generating unpleasant thoughts in the mind, therefore encountering the unpleasant is suffering. Or, from the cause of encountering the unpleasant, just as a forest is burned by fire, the fire of hatred burns the mind, and many wishes arise to be separated from it. Whatever generates many wishes, that itself is suffering, therefore encountering the unpleasant is suffering. Whatever is sought but not found is also suffering. What is desired is not to be separated from suffering and not to meet with it again, to meet with happiness and not to be separated from it again, but not to be so, that is seeking what is desired but not finding it. Or, one desires not to meet with birth, old age, sickness, death, and so on, but not to have that desire fulfilled is called seeking what is desired but not finding it. Or, one desires not to meet with the unpleasant and not to be separated from the pleasant, but not to accomplish that is called seeking what is desired but not finding it. Or, one desires that those who do good increase and that non-virtue be obscured, but virtue is obscured and non-virtue increases, that is called seeking what is desired but not finding it. Or, one desires not to be born in the three lower realms and to be born in the higher realms, but one falls into the three lower realms and is not born in the higher realms, that is called seeking what is desired but not finding it. Why is seeking what is desired but not finding it called suffering? Alas! Such a desired object has not been found in the past, is not found now, and will not be found in the future, because harm arises in all three times, therefore seeking what is desired but not finding it is suffering. Or, because it destroys the thoughts in the mind, becomes a basis for aversion, and that cause always makes the mind suffer, therefore seeking what is desired but not finding it is suffering. In short, the aggregates of grasping

The meaning of "the five are suffering" is the five aggregates of grasping, from the aggregate of form to the aggregate of consciousness. In short, it means that the five aggregates contain all suffering, and all suffering is divided into the initial suffering, the intermediate suffering, and the final suffering. Among them, the initial suffering is birth. The intermediate suffering is aging, sickness, separation from loved ones, encountering the unloved, and not obtaining what one desires. The final suffering is death. These three sufferings are all contained in the five aggregates, so in short, the five aggregates of grasping are suffering. Alternatively, since the five aggregates are contained in the suffering that persists and the suffering that follows, in short, these five aggregates of grasping are suffering. The suffering that persists is aging, sickness, death, separation from loved ones, encountering the unloved, and not obtaining what one desires. The suffering of the suffering that follows is birth, because it is related to the connection of the continuum from one life to the next. Alternatively, the differences in suffering are immeasurable, and even if described until the end of an eon, they cannot be exhausted. Therefore, in order to summarize the endless sufferings of various different characteristics into a common characteristic, it is said, "In short, the five aggregates of grasping are suffering." Alternatively, like fire are the sufferings such as birth. The cause, like a tree that produces sufferings such as birth, is the five aggregates of grasping, because they are the cause of all suffering, so it is also said, "In short, the five aggregates of grasping are suffering." Alternatively, birth and so on are like the substance of seeds, and the five aggregates of grasping are like a field, so it is also said, "In short, the five aggregates of grasping," and so on. For example, the suffering of the arising of the aggregates is birth. The suffering of the complete ripening of the aggregates is aging. The suffering of harm to the aggregates is sickness. The suffering of the destruction of the aggregates is death.
