, as well as being born into the nature of similarity, and being born into the nature of renunciation. Among them, being born from understanding the holy Dharma means being born as a son of the Buddha from understanding the meaning of the Tathagata's teachings, as it is said in the sutras: born from the heart, born from the mouth, born from the holy Dharma Vinaya. Being born in the womb means that the consciousness first enters the womb, and until it comes out of the womb, from a slippery state comes a gelatinous state, and from a gelatinous state comes a hardened state, and so on. Being born into a perfect lineage is like the lineage of precious jewels transforming into Indra Nila, and transforming into a great Indra Nila, and so on. Being born into the same kind of sentient beings means that the limbs of the body are similar, such as a cow being similar to a cow, and a horse being similar to a horse. Being born into renunciation means that after being born from the mother's womb, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are each perfected. Among the five births, here we consider being born in the womb and being born into renunciation as two. Why is birth said to be suffering? The answer is that all births in the three realms are constantly burned by the three kinds of suffering, so birth is said to be suffering. How is it so? Those who are born from the cause of non-merit, born into the three lower realms and so on, are constantly burned by the fire of suffering upon suffering, such as burning. Those who are born from the cause of merit and actions that lead to merit, born into the same kind of beings such as humans and gods in the desire realm, are constantly burned by the fire of the suffering of change. Those who are born from the cause of unwavering actions that are the nature of meditation, other than actions that are non-meritorious and do not lead to merit, and those who are born into the realms of gods in the form and formless realms, are constantly burned by the fire of the suffering of conditioning. They are also impermanent in nature. Furthermore, like trees growing and black soil being

Just as there is no occurrence of being blown down by wind or carried away by water if a tree does not grow, similarly, if there is birth, there will be suffering such as cutting, going, binding, killing, hunger, and thirst. If there is no birth, these will not occur. Therefore, birth is also said to be suffering. Or, birth is the source of many sufferings, the origin of various sorrows, the root of meaningless things, the beginning of binding the cause of joy, the breeding ground of various diseases, the great treasure of many faults, the basis of decay and destruction, the field that causes fatigue and discomfort to body and mind, the common cause of various afflictions, despised by the noble ones, praised by children, the place where those who love existence manifestly rejoice and desire, and therefore, the object of compassion of the Tathagatas. Therefore, birth is also suffering. Or, from the moment of conception until reaching the ocean of death, one is constantly accompanied by various kinds of suffering, therefore birth is also said to be suffering. How is that? First, due to the impure conduct of parents, when consciousness enters and faints within the mixture of blood and semen, it is painful, like falling from a great cliff and entering into darkness. The blood and semen of the parents gradually transform into gelatinous, pasty, lumpy, and other forms, and when they mature, they are full of suffering, just like the ripening of fruit. When limbs and minor limbs grow separately with difficulty, pain arises as if stretching limbs against each other. In the womb, when dwelling between digestion and non-digestion, it is painful, like being pressed between two mountains. When the mother eats warm or cold food, and during movements such as running, jumping, stretching or contracting limbs, one experiences various kinds of suffering. If the mother eats hot food, it is painful like being surrounded by fire; if she eats cold food, it is like being in a field of snow.
