A practitioner, what are the four branches? Being skilled in harm, being skilled in the cause of harm, being skilled in abandoning harm, and being skilled in preventing harm from arising again after it has been abandoned. Likewise, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened one, who possesses these four branches, is also called the unsurpassed physician, who can extract all poisonous arrows. What are these four branches? Here, O monks, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened one, truly knows, as it is, "This is the truth of suffering," truly knows, as it is, "This is the truth of the origin of suffering," truly knows, as it is, "This is the truth of the cessation of suffering," truly knows, as it is, "This is the truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering." Thus it is said. Therefore, in order to explain in detail these four truths that were briefly stated, it was said, "What is the noble truth of suffering?" and so on. One might ask, why first state it briefly and then explain it in detail? Because there are two types of disciples: those who like brief explanations and those who like detailed explanations. For those who like brief explanations, like the venerable Shariputra, from "What are the four noble truths?" to "the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering," he gave a concise teaching. But for those who like detailed explanations, like the venerable Nandika and others, he explained in detail "What is the noble truth of suffering?" and so on. Or, there are two types of taming: one where the power of the cause is strong, and one where the power of the condition is strong. Like the venerable Kashyapa, who had accumulated a great deal of merit in previous lives and whose mind-stream was fully ripened, for them, merely mentioning the name would allow them to understand the meaning extensively. Therefore, for those with strong causal power, a brief explanation was given. Those with strong conditional power need to be taught by a virtuous friend. If they are not given a detailed explanation, they will not be able to understand, so a detailed explanation was given. Or, there are two types of faculties: sharp faculties and dull faculties. For those with sharp faculties,

It is shown briefly for the sake of the wise, and explained in detail for the sake of the dull-witted. Again, there are two types of Hearers: those who have heard much and those who have heard little. For those who have heard much, it is shown briefly; for those who have heard little, it is explained in detail. In the case of explaining the meaning of dependent origination, etc., whether briefly or in detail, this answer is given. That which is called the Noble Truth of Suffering is so called because suffering is understood by the noble ones, hence it is called the Noble Truth of Suffering. Or, if one understands suffering in samsara, one becomes a noble one, hence it is the Noble Truth of Suffering. Truth is that suffering is not inverted, because it is the reality of suffering, hence it is the Noble Truth of Suffering. Moreover, since suffering arises from birth, etc., among the eight sufferings, why is birth explained first? Just as discipline is the basis for the initial arising of all qualities of the world and beyond the world, so too, birth is the cause for the initial arising of the remaining sufferings such as aging and sickness, therefore it is explained first. Alternatively, there are two types of suffering: the root suffering and the suffering that is like branches, etc. Among these, the root suffering is birth, because it is the root of the remaining sufferings such as pleasure. The suffering that is like branches, etc., is the remaining sufferings such as the suffering of aging, etc., because they arise from the cause of birth. What is birth? As it was said earlier in the context of dependent origination, such as saying, 'Those and those sentient beings, in those and those classes of sentient beings, birth and total birth, etc.,' that is birth. Furthermore, due to the distinctions of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, etc., accompanied by the habitual tendencies of afflictions such as attachment, by the force of becoming the cause of linking rebirth, the complete attainment of aggregates, elements, and sense bases in those and those classes of sentient beings is called birth. Alternatively, there are five types of birth: birth from understanding the noble Dharma, birth from the womb, and birth from the perfection of lineage.
