Where is feeling experienced? From attachment arises the pleasure of feeling, and the desire to be constantly together, therefore, after that is "becoming." From desire arises the effort to seek it, therefore, after that is "grasping." At the time of grasping, afflictions increase, and the increase of afflictions also creates the karma of "becoming," therefore, after that is "becoming." When karma and afflictions accumulate, they will arise in the five paths, therefore, after that is "birth." After birth, various kinds of suffering arise, therefore, after that is "old age and death." Therefore, the order is arranged in this way. After explaining dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths are mentioned, and wanting to explain as it was said, the question is asked. Among them, "What are the Four Noble Truths?" etc. Among them, "that" is a word of distinction, even from the twenty-two faculties, etc., the Four Truths are shown more clearly, that is the meaning. Why did the Blessed One teach the Four Noble Truths? Because when those who claim to be teachers, such as wanderers, naked ones, skull-bearers, non-sectarians, etc., proclaim and demonstrate the characteristics of their own doctrines, he saw that they considered their own doctrine to be the true and unerring truth, and that others' were not, thus arrogance arose towards what is inverted, and in order to show the ultimate truth to those who are deluded by happiness, he said, "What are the Four Noble Truths?" etc. Or, having entered this scripture, the marks of being a householder

In the past, through the fragrance of flowers of virtue arising from serving the Tathagatas, having perfectly accumulated the collections for attaining fruition, and for the sake of those who possess the fortune to realize the noble truths with pure intention and conduct, the Bhagavan spoke this sutra entitled "What are the Noble Truths?" Furthermore, for those who experience unbearable suffering in the lower realms and whose minds are filled with fear, the Four Truths are taught in order to show the cause for not going there. Why? For example, beings born in hells such as Avici, Atapa, Raurava, Maha Raurava, Tapana, and Pratapana, without control, their mouths are opened with iron tongs, and when molten iron and iron liquid are poured in, they experience the suffering of flames blazing intensely on their noses, crowns of their heads, and so on. Furthermore, those born as pretas are oppressed by the suffering of thirst and hunger, and although they constantly eat and drink, there is no time of satisfaction, let alone cessation. Because they are tormented by the ripening of past karma, even when they go in search of water, the water dries up, or it becomes filled with impure and extremely foul things like pus and blood, and the flowering trees also become without flowers, and the fruit trees also become without fruit, and so on, experiencing immeasurable suffering. Furthermore, those born as animals are constantly uneasy, fearing the suffering of being bound, killed, and eating each other. In order to show the cause for not going to the three lower realms, the Four Noble Truths are taught. If one truly understands the Four Truths as they are, then all of them will be liberated from the suffering of the lower realms. What is the meaning of the Noble Truths? The term "Noble" refers to one who has mastery over oneself. For example, Buddhas and great noble Shravakas are called noble because they have attained freedom of mind. Ordinary individuals, however, are...
