Form Holding is holding as the nature of the cause, because it is the cause of them. The great elements are also four, because they are meaningless and incapable. Like the legs of a chair, they are not five or three. Because the nature of the great elements is not understood, in order to show it, it is said, "What is the element of earth?" etc. What is heavy and hard? What is heavy is when the head of the scale is low and the tail is high. In this case, there is also form that arises from the elements, which is said to be heavy and light. In order to distinguish it, it is said "hard." Saying "hard" is to distinguish the form that arises from the elements, meaning rough and hard. The form that arises from the elements is heavy, but it is not of the nature of hard and solid. What is the element of water? What is wet and moist? Its own characteristic is wet. It also makes others wet, so it is moist. What is the element of fire? What is warm and ripening? It is warm because it is hot in nature. It also makes other things warm and ripen, so it is ripening. What is the element of wind? What is contracting, stretching, light, and moving? The limbs of the body, etc., contract inward and stretch outward, and the outer petals, etc., move and carry, which is the element of wind. Or there is also form that arises from the elements. In order to avoid confusion with it, the term "moving" is used. In this case, lightness is the nature of the element of wind. Moving is the function of the element of wind. From the gateway shown by moving, the nature of lightness will become clear. Whatever is light in nature of moving is the element of wind. Whatever is without moving but only has lightness is the form that arises from the elements. It would be sufficient to say "from that," but why is it necessary to say "element"? If only earth is mentioned, then the white and red colors that arise from the elements are also said to be from the world. In order to prevent confusion with it, the word "element" is used. In order to summarize and show what has been said above, it is said, "What is this form?" etc.

In short, the form that is the characteristic of the four great elements, together with the four formless aggregates of name mentioned above, are collectively called name and form. In the Abhidharma, there are three types of form: visible and obstructive, invisible but obstructive, and neither visible nor obstructive. There are also three types of name: feeling, perception, and volition, excluding the aggregate of consciousness. Combining the three forms and the three names together, it is called name and form. Among these, the visible and obstructive form is that which becomes the object of the root of name, and is called form. The invisible but obstructive form consists of nine things: the five sense organs, such as the eye, and the four objects of sound, smell, taste, and touch. The form that is neither visible nor obstructive is non-revealing form. In order to explain the six sense bases, it is said that name has six sense bases because of form, etc. In short, there are only six sense bases. Having only mentioned the names of the six sense bases, in order to explain the detailed classification, the eye sense base, etc., are mentioned. Among these, the cause of the form of the four great elements gives rise to the eye sense base to the body sense base. The cause of the four aggregates gives rise to the mind sense base. Alternatively, when the four great elements become pure and clear, they transform into the eye sense base to the body sense base. When the four aggregates become clear, they transform into the mind sense base. Among these, the eye sense base is that which has the nature of seeing, with form as its object, and the form is clear and bright. The ear sense base is that which has the nature of decay, with sound as its object, and the form is clear and bright. The nose sense base is that which has the nature of smelling, with smell as its object, and the form is clear and bright. The tongue sense base is that which has the nature of tasting, with taste as its object, and the form and earth-wood are bright. The body sense base is that which has the nature of feeling softness, roughness, etc., with touch as its object, and the form is clear and bright.
