We believe that the initial consciousness, when it combines in the mother's womb, becomes consciousness due to the influence of karma (འདུ་བྱེད།). If it were not so, how would consciousness function? The Blessed One said in the Sutra of Color Decay, 'In the moment of combination in the mother's womb, the fainting of consciousness contradicts the statement that consciousness is a limb.' How does that manifest? The sutra says, 'Great Delight, without the entry of consciousness, in the fetus and so on, would name and form arise?' The answer is, 'No.' And so on. There, it is considered that consciousness is functioning. In the desire realm, all six consciousnesses exist. In the form realm, because one is free from the desire to eat food bit by bit, there is no nose consciousness or tongue consciousness, but there are four consciousnesses: eye consciousness, ear consciousness, body consciousness, and mind consciousness. In the formless realm, because one is free from the desire for form, there are no five senses. Therefore, there are no five consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, but it is said that only mind consciousness exists. After explaining consciousness, in order to show the limbs of name and form, it is said, 'With consciousness as the condition, there is name and form,' and so on. Because it can cause one to go to other places, it is name, meaning it can cause one to go to other birthplaces. Or, because it can focus on objects such as form, it is name, meaning it can take objects. Because it is obstructive and can be harmed, it is form. The combination of these two is called name and form. In order to explain in detail the briefly shown name and form, it is said, 'The four aggregates of name and formlessness,' and so on. Experiencing the results of good and bad deeds is feeling (ཚོར་བ།). Taking the characteristics of objects is perception (འདུ་ཤེས།). Initiating actions in the mind is formation (འདུ་བྱེད།). Individually recognizing objects is consciousness (རྣམ་པར་ཤེས།). These four formless aggregates are called name. Regarding the form mentioned above, because it is not known what form is or how many there are, doubt arises. Therefore, it is said, 'What is form?' and so on. What

To explain a little, all these forms that are "the four great elements," etc., what is called "a little form" refers to: past forms, future forms, present forms, internal forms, external forms, etc. All these are condensed into two types: the form of the four great elements and the form transformed from the four great elements. Here, we are talking about the form of the cause and the form of the result. The four great elements are the form of the cause, and the form transformed from the four great elements is the form of the result. Among them, the forms transformed from the four great elements are eleven types, as mentioned earlier. The word "transformed" refers to the cause. Five causes make the four great elements the cause of the form transformed from the elements. For example, if it is said that fire arises depending on wood, it is similar to saying that fire arises from the cause of wood. The five causes are: producing, base, relying, depending, and increasing. Among them, producing means that without the four great elements, the form transformed from the elements would not arise. Base means that apart from the four great elements, the forms transformed from the elements have no power to exist and rely in other places. Relying means that if the elements decay and change, the form transformed from the elements that rely on it will also change. Depending means that when the four great elements and the form transformed from the elements arise similarly, the elements continuously hold the cause of the form transformed from the elements without interruption. Increasing means that when the elements increase, the form transformed from the elements also increases and remains constant. So, what are the four great elements? Therefore, it is explained like this, "the earth element," etc. The word "element" refers to holding, because it holds its own characteristics and holds the form transformed from the four great elements, it is called "element." Holding its own characteristics means that the earth element holds the characteristic of solidity, the water element holds the characteristic of moisture, the fire element holds the characteristic of warmth, and the wind element holds the characteristic of motion. Transformed from the four great elements
