Therefore, the Dharma to be explained is the twelve branches of scripture. The Dharma to be practiced is the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. The Dharma of the result is nirvana, and these three are not understood. Doubting these is called not understanding the Dharma. Not understanding the Sangha means that there are two types of Sangha: the noble ones who are learners and the noble ones who are non-learners. Among them, the noble ones who are learners are the seven from stream-enterer to those entering the state of an Arhat. The noble ones who are non-learners are those who have attained the fruit of Arhatship. Furthermore, not understanding the ways in which the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples are complete in faith, complete in discipline, complete in learning, and so forth, as will be explained below, and doubting these, is not understanding the Sangha. Not understanding suffering means not understanding the five aggregates with defilements, and the suffering associated with birth, joy, and so on. Not understanding the origin means not understanding that actions and afflictions are the cause of producing the aggregates. Not understanding cessation means not understanding that nirvana is peace, excellence, and happiness. Not understanding the path means not understanding the Noble Eightfold Path. Not understanding virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas means being far removed from blameworthy dharmas. Virtue, or everything, refers to wisdom. Some consider it to refer to acquisition, because acquiring the cause of wisdom is virtue. The opposite of this is non-virtue. Not understanding the cause of virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas is called not understanding virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas. Alternatively, virtue is without fault. Non-virtue is with fault. Not understanding these in this way is not understanding virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas. With fault and without fault: blameworthy things are with fault, meaning related to sin. Abandoning blameworthy things is without fault, meaning related to goodness. Furthermore, with fault belongs to the dark side.

Because it belongs to that side. Being without fault is because it belongs to the white side. Not understanding those is called not understanding what is with fault and what is without fault. Not understanding the Dharma to be relied upon and the Dharma not to be relied upon, regarding what will be beneficial, what should be relied upon are the uncontaminated virtues and the unconditioned. Because relying on it will lead to liberation, that is the Dharma to be relied upon. What will be harmful, the Dharma not to be relied upon, is non-virtue, the actions that lead to the three lower realms. Not understanding those Dharmas is called not understanding the Dharma to be relied upon and the Dharma not to be relied upon. The so-called six sense sources, etc., the arising of eye consciousness relying on the eye and form, and the arising of mind consciousness relying on mind and Dharma, is just that. Regarding this acting of no-self, clinging to the existence of self, etc., and generating pride, is called not truly understanding the six sense sources as they are. Not realizing faults, etc., are synonyms for not understanding, or it should be understood that the lower explains the upper. These twenty-eight words, in summary, reveal seven kinds of ignorance: ignorance of time, ignorance of things, ignorance of transformation, ignorance of the supreme, ignorance of suchness, ignorance of affliction and purification, and ignorance arising from manifest arrogance. Among them, from not knowing the past extreme to not knowing the past and future extremes, these three words reveal ignorance of time. From not knowing the internal to not knowing the external and internal, these three words reveal ignorance of things. From not knowing karma to not knowing the Dharmas of dependent origination, this reveals ignorance of transformation. From not knowing the Buddha to not knowing the Sangha, these three words reveal ignorance of the supreme. From not knowing suffering to not knowing the path, these four words reveal ignorance of suchness. From not knowing virtuous and non-virtuous Dharmas to not knowing the Dharmas that should not be relied upon, and then to the Dharmas of affliction and purification.
