Without eliminating the ground and afflictions, there will be no rebirth. Therefore, it is said that with the cessation of existence, rebirth ceases. For example, if a vase is not made, craving and attachment will not arise; if a tree does not grow, it will not be burned by forest fire; just as a vegetable garden will not be carried away by water, if there is no birth, there will be no suffering such as old age and death. Therefore, from the cessation of birth, it is said that only the great aggregate of suffering will be extinguished. In terms of elaborating on the limbs, it is said what is ignorance and so on. The term "ignorance" has four meanings in this word of negation: small, derogatory, incompatible, and non-existent. Among them, the meaning of being small is like calling a woman with a slender waist "without a waist." The meaning of being derogatory is like calling a bad child "without a child." The meaning of being non-existent is like saying "no food, no water." The meaning of being contradictory is like calling someone who is incompatible with association "not a friend." This should be seen as the meaning of being contradictory, and what is incompatible with wisdom is called ignorance. In order to show its nature in detail, it is said "not knowing the beginning" and so on. Among them, the karma of the past is the previous life, and not knowing that there is a previous life is not knowing the beginning. Or, was I produced from the past? Or, was I not produced in the past? Like this, improperly attending to the aggregates of the past is not knowing the beginning. As for not knowing the end, the end refers to the future time of the next life, not knowing that there is a next life. Or, will I arise in the future? Or, will I not arise in the future? Who will arise in the future? How will it arise? Like this, improperly contemplating the aggregates of the future is not knowing the end. As for not knowing the beginning and the end, the beginning and the end refer to this present life, this

Here, not knowing the characteristics of internal and external dharmas, is called not knowing the beginning and end. Or, not knowing the continuous arising of the past, future, and present three times, is called not knowing the beginning and end. That is, not knowing that one is born in this life from the karma and afflictions of previous lives, and not knowing that future lives arise from the karma and afflictions of this life. Or, regarding other sentient beings, what does this one have? What is this one? From where did these sentient beings come here? Where will they be born after dying and transmigrating from here? Where will they be born? Thinking improperly in this way, and becoming doubtful, is called not knowing the beginning and end. Not knowing the internal, the internal refers to one's own body, that is, not knowing that it is the nature of the five aggregates, is called not knowing the internal. Or, improperly thinking that those belonging to the internal sense bases of oneself are 'I', is called not knowing the internal. Not knowing the external, refers to forms, sounds, etc., that is, not knowing that they are the nature of minute particles. Or, universally conceiving as 'I' those external dharmas that do not belong to the category of sentient beings, is called not knowing the external. Not knowing the internal and external, the internal and external refer to the formations belonging to the continuum of others. Improperly considering them as friends, enemies, or neutral, is called not knowing the internal and external. Not knowing the characteristics of meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering formations, is called not knowing karma. Or, improperly thinking that there is an agent who performs karma, is called not knowing karma. Not knowing the maturation, refers to not knowing the result of those karmas, that is, not knowing the nature of the three lower realms, gods, humans, etc., is called not knowing the maturation. Not knowing the maturation of karma, refers to not knowing that doing this karma will ripen into this maturation, that is, not knowing that doing unwholesome karma will ripen in the three lower realms, and doing wholesome karma will ripen in gods, humans, etc. Or, improperly thinking that the result of maturation will be experienced by 'I' or the experiencer.
