Conception means not knowing the complete maturation. Considering karma and its results, etc., means not knowing the complete maturation of karma. For example, saying that killing will lead to rebirth in higher realms, and so on. Not knowing that not killing and not taking what is not given, etc., are virtuous, means not knowing that good deeds have been done. Not knowing that actions such as killing and taking what is not given are non-virtuous, means not knowing that bad deeds have been done. Taking what is not given and then giving it to others is not a leading karma. Not knowing that karma is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous means not knowing that good and bad deeds have been done. Not knowing the cause means that there are six types of causes: the cause of similar category, the pervasive cause, the co-emergent cause, the associated cause, the efficient cause, and the completely matured cause. Not knowing these six is called not knowing the cause. Among them, the cause of similar category is that in the desire realm, the previously arisen dharmas that are to be abandoned by seeing suffering are the same cause as the later arising and to-be-arisen dharmas that are to be abandoned by seeing suffering in the desire realm. Furthermore, the later increase and arising of virtuous roots from a basis that previously had a small amount of virtuous roots is also called the cause of similar category. For example, from the virtuous root of seeing suffering arises the wisdom of seeing suffering, and similarly, from the virtuous root of seeing the path arises the wisdom of seeing the path. The four truths of the form and formless realms should also be applied separately. What is the pervasive cause? It is associated only with afflicted dharmas. Previously arisen afflicted dharmas are the pervasive cause of the later arising and to-be-arisen afflictions of one's own ground. For example, previously arisen wrong view associated with the desire realm is the pervasive cause of later arising and to-be-arisen wrong conceptions, wrong speech, wrong extremes of actions, and wrong feelings. What is the co-emergent cause? For example, the great elements at the time of arising

They rely on each other and cause each other to arise. When mind and mental factors arise, they also rely on each other to arise, which is the co-existent cause. What is the corresponding cause? Virtuous and non-virtuous, as well as neutral mind and mental factors, are mutually corresponding causes. A virtuous mind corresponds with virtuous mental factors, but does not correspond with non-virtuous mental factors. Similarly, non-virtuous and neutral mind and mental factors also correspond separately. The efficient cause is that if something exists, something arises; if something does not exist, something does not arise. If there is a seed, a sprout arises; if there is no seed, a sprout does not arise. Or some say that any dharma that does not obscure, other than oneself, is the efficient cause. For example, when the eye and object meet and consciousness arises, all dharmas that do not obscure or hinder are the efficient cause. What is the ripening cause? Non-virtuous dharmas and contaminated virtuous dharmas cause beings to be reborn in the lower realms, so they are called ripening causes. Neutral dharmas only cause the arising of similar results, but like rotten seeds, they are weak and do not have the power of ripening, so they are called ripening causes. Or, thinking that there is no cause, or thinking that Ishvara, nature, self, etc., are the cause, is called not knowing the cause. Not knowing the result means not knowing the five results: the result of effort, the result of similarity, the result of ripening, the result of dominance, and the result of separation. Not knowing these five results is called not knowing the result. The result of effort is what result arises from the power of what cause. For example, farmers obtain grains and other fruits from their own efforts in growing beans and other crops, which is called the result of effort. The result of similarity is what makes something similar to itself. From past virtuous causes, one will also practice virtue in the future, which is the result. From past non-virtuous causes, one will also practice non-virtue in the future.

Now, the ripening of the fruit. The fruit of ripening is the ripening of the aggregates in gods, humans, sentient beings, hells, etc., due to the cause of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. The fruit of power is, for example, by the power of the eye faculty, eye consciousness arises without obstruction. The fruit of separation is the attainment of Nirvana by abandoning afflictions through the power of cultivating the noble path. Not knowing cause and effect means not knowing that doing this cause will produce this effect, and how cause and effect increase, which is not knowing cause and effect. Not knowing the dharmas born from causes means that the five aggregates, eighteen realms, twelve sources, etc., are dharmas born from causes. Not understanding cessation through separate examination and cessation without examination, and that space is not a dharma born from causes. Or, external dharmas such as sprouts and leaves are dharmas born from seeds. Internal dharmas belonging to sentient beings are also of the nature of dharmas in which actions arise from the cause of ignorance. Not understanding that they are not born from Ishvara and the creator is called not knowing the dharmas born from causes. Not knowing dependent origination means not knowing how the twelve limbs of internal dependent origination, from ignorance conditioning actions to birth conditioning old age and death, arise from one life to another. Not knowing the dharmas of dependent origination means not understanding that external dependent origination, from seed to sprout, from flower to fruit, is produced by seeds, the four great elements, and time, etc. Not knowing the Buddha means not knowing the dharma of the noble path by which one becomes a Buddha. Or, not understanding that the Tathagata Bhagavan is an Arhat, perfectly enlightened, endowed with knowledge and conduct, etc., not understanding such a principle, and doubting whether it is so or not, is not knowing the Buddha. Not knowing the Dharma means that there are three kinds of Dharma: the Dharma to be preached, the Dharma to be practiced, and the Dharma of the fruit.
