Therefore, the cause of the karma of sentient beings is because the seeds of karma that have been manifestly accumulated are held by consciousness. The cause of name and form is because when consciousness transmigrates into the mother's womb, name and form increase and expand. Name and form also perform two kinds of actions: namely, accomplishing the body of sentient beings, and becoming the cause of the birthplaces. Accomplishing the body of sentient beings is because by its power, limbs and faculties gradually grow, and they are born similar to their own kind. Becoming the cause of the six sense bases is because, relying on the previous branches of name and form, the later branches of the six sense bases, such as the eyes, arise from their growth. The six sense bases also perform two kinds of actions: namely, accomplishing the complete body of sentient beings, and becoming the cause of contact. Accomplishing the complete body of sentient beings means that the six sense bases are without defect, which is called the complete body of sentient beings. Becoming the cause of contact means that if there are sense bases such as the eyes, then name and form and consciousness meet, and this is designated as contact. Contact also performs two kinds of actions: namely, connecting sentient beings with non-virtuous enjoyment, and becoming the cause of feeling. Connecting sentient beings with non-virtuous enjoyment means that if there is contact, then one will experience feelings similar to a mixture of the six kinds of food, namely, pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neither pleasant nor painful feeling. Contact becomes the cause of feeling because if there is contact, then when one encounters a beautiful object, pleasant feeling arises; when one encounters a bad object, painful feeling arises; and when one encounters an object that is neither, then feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful arises. Feeling also performs two kinds of actions: namely, placing sentient beings in the enjoyment of life, and becoming the cause of craving. Placing sentient beings in the enjoyment of life means acting because of the power of feeling.
