Furthermore, it is taught by dividing the land into ten places, and for the sake of teaching by dividing the mind into many in the realm of eye consciousness and the realm of mind. In order to eliminate the single delusion about form, the twelve sources are explained, that is, in the chapter on sources, the eye source and the form source, etc., are divided into ten forms and explained. Alternatively, there are three types of desires: to teach briefly, to teach in the middle, and to teach extensively. In that, the five aggregates are explained for the purpose of briefly teaching desire. The twelve sources are explained according to the power of teaching in the middle. The eighteen realms are explained according to the power of wanting to explain in detail. Or, the aggregates and so on are taught based on sharp faculties, medium faculties, and dull faculties. The five aggregates are explained for the sake of sharp faculties. The twelve sources are explained for the sake of medium faculties. The eighteen realms are explained for the sake of dull faculties. After the sources, it is the time to teach dependent origination, so based on that, the Blessed One said, "Monks, what are the twelve links of dependent origination?" and so on. What is the need to teach dependent origination? Because beings, not understanding dependent origination, wander in the prison of samsara, bound by the strong chains of afflictions, and are constantly harmed by various sufferings such as birth and old age. If they understand it, the darkness of ignorance will be dispelled, they will be freed from the prison of the three realms, and they will be liberated from various sufferings. Therefore, dependent origination is taught. Or, in order to show that these beings are not produced without a cause, nor are they produced from a discordant cause, but are produced from the cause of ignorance, dependent origination is taught. Or, in order to show what is the cause of being born in samsara, and how one can be liberated from samsara, dependent origination is taught as having two characteristics: proceeding in accordance with the law and reversing from the law. In order to understand what is the cause of being born in samsara, that is, ignorance conditioned by

It was said that actions and so on arise in accordance with the proper order, and in order to know from where one can be liberated from the cycle of existence, it was said that when ignorance ceases, the nature of the cessation of actions and so on is liberation from the cycle of existence. What is dependent origination? The meaning of 'depending' is the meaning of 'meeting'. The meaning of 'arising' is the meaning of 'birth'. When cause and condition meet and the result is born, it is called dependent origination. The meaning of 'twelve branches' is the meaning of 'twelve parts'. Alternatively, the three words 'depending', 'relating', and 'arising' are to prevent three kinds of wrong views. In order to refute the statement that 'all phenomena arise from no cause', the word 'depending' is mentioned, meaning that phenomena do not arise from no cause, but arise in dependence on causes and conditions. In order to refute the statement that 'Isvara and the self and other agents produce phenomena' as dissimilar causes, the word 'relating' is mentioned, meaning that Isvara and so on arise from similar causes, and phenomena do not arise from dissimilar causes. In order to refute annihilationism, the word 'arising' is mentioned, meaning that one is not born from this world to the next, but one is born until the continuum of karma and afflictions is not cut off. Alternatively, the word 'depending' prevents the view of permanence. If phenomena were permanent, they would not need to depend on causes and conditions. Because they depend on causes and conditions, they are not permanent. The word 'relating' prevents the view of arising without action. Whoever does the action experiences the result, and it is not that someone else does the action and someone else experiences the result. The word 'arising' prevents the view of annihilation. How can one understand the meaning of dependent origination? It should be understood in eleven ways: nature, collection of branches, establishment of the causes of branches, establishment of the actions of branches, collection of all afflictions of branches, meaning, profundity, detailed distinction, accordance with the proper order, and liberation from the cycle of existence.
