The past Buddhas taught the Dharma for the sake of taming, therefore they taught the twelve ayatanas. For the sake of taming, all the consciousness aggregates were summarized into the mind-ayatana, so the twelve ayatanas were spoken of. Just as the Dharma spoken of in the context of the aggregates is also spoken of in the context of the elements, among the five aggregates, in the form aggregate, eleven forms arising from the elements are spoken of. Among them, the five objects and five faculties, from the eye-element to the form-element, and from the form-element to the touch-element, ten elements are spoken of. In the context of the five aggregates, the feeling aggregate, the perception aggregate, the volition aggregate, and non-manifesting form are shown as the dharma-element in the context of the elements. The consciousness aggregate is shown as the eye-consciousness element to the mind-consciousness element in the context of the elements. In the context of the aggregates, the mind faculty is spoken of as the mind-element in the context of the elements. And the Dharmas that are spoken of in the elements are also spoken of at the time of the ayatanas. How so? In the elements, the five elements beginning with the mind-element, and the five beginning with the form-element, these ten are spoken of as ten ayatanas, from the eye-ayatana to the form-ayatana, in the context of the ayatanas. In the context of the elements, the seven dharmas beginning with feeling are shown as the dharma-element, and this is shown as the dharma-ayatana in the context of the ayatanas. In the context of the elements, the six elements beginning with the eye-consciousness element, and the mind-element, these seven, are shown as the mind-ayatana in the context of the ayatanas. If someone asks, why is this said? Because there are three kinds of ignorance, and in order to eliminate these ignorances, these Dharmas are repeatedly taught by giving them other names. These three kinds of ignorance are: complete ignorance about the mind, complete ignorance about the mind and form, and complete ignorance about form. In order to eliminate complete ignorance about the mind, the five aggregates are taught. In the context of the five aggregates, in the aggregates of feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness, the mind is divided into many and spoken of. In order to eliminate complete ignorance about the mind and form, the eighteen elements are taught. Eye and form, etc.
