Ro! The two, tongue and nose, the realm of eye and ear, as previously mentioned, are for reaching distant objects, because one can see forms that are far away, and also hear sounds called from afar. The two, nose and tongue, are because contact becomes the object; if there is no contact with the object, one cannot grasp it, so there is no reaching far away. The eye reaches farther than the ear, because one can see water flowing from a distance, but the ear cannot hear its sound. The eye was pointed out before the ear. The nose was pointed out before the tongue, just as the tongue has not touched the food, but the nose has already smelled its scent, because the nose can reach it faster. Alternatively, for this body, the realm of the eye is located above. Below it is the ear. Below it is the nose. Below it is the tongue. Below it, mostly, is located the body. The mind relies on these, does not dwell in the object, does not dwell in the direction, so it is spoken of last. So, the meaning of kind is the meaning of realm, for example, one thing has many kinds, such as gold and silver, which is called realm. Similarly, this body is one, but has eighteen kinds, so it is called the eighteen realms. Or, the meaning of source is the meaning of realm, for example, the place from which jewels and the like arise is called realm. Similarly, the place from which many minds and mental events arise is called realm. After the realm is the time to talk about the sources, therefore, for this, monks, what are the twelve sources? and so on. What is the need to point out the twelve sources? It is to know the attachment to self and the attachment to possessions. If one fully understands it, one can abandon attachment. If one abandons attachment, one will not manifest in the three realms, that is the need for pointing it out. Or, seeing and hearing, and tasting and smelling, and touching, and the manifestation of consciousness, cause attachment to phenomena. In order to abandon the attachment to self, the twelve sources are pointed out. Among them, from the eye source to the body source there are five, and from the form source to the touch source there are five, the meaning of these ten is the realm of

It also agrees with what was said (before). Above the six realms of consciousness, the mind realm is indicated, and the seven dharmas are called the source of mind. In the case of the dharma realm, the seven things that are spoken of are called the source of dharma. To this, there is a rebuttal to the statement "the source of birth within the eye": If there is a "self", then either "inner" or "outer" is fine, because whatever is blessed by the "self" is called "inner". But Buddhists believe that all dharmas are without self, and if there is no self, how can one say "the source of birth within the eye"? The answer is that this is not contradictory, because the mind itself, which is the basis of pride, is called "self", and whatever the mind becomes the cause and condition of the proud, is called "the inner source of birth". So why is the order of the sources of birth arranged in this way? In order to be consistent with the world's way of speaking, the order of the sources of birth is arranged in this way. Because the world's way of speaking is that they first meet and then look at each other, so the source of eye birth is spoken of first. After that, they meet and start talking, so it is the source of ear birth. Then, they enjoy bathing, fragrance, garlands, etc., so it is the source of nose birth. Then, they enjoy food and falling, so it is the source of tongue birth. Then, they enjoy beds and women, etc., so it is the source of body birth. The source of mind birth pervades all of these, so it is spoken of last. So why is it necessary to speak of the twelve sources of birth? In order to clearly indicate the possessor of the six consciousnesses and the six objects, only the twelve sources of birth are spoken of. Among them, from the eye to the source of mind birth is the cause of the possessor of the six consciousnesses. From form to dharma is the cause of the object of the six consciousnesses. What does the source of birth mean? The meaning of the gate of birth is the meaning of the source of birth, because the mind and the mental factors are the cause of arising and growing, so it is called the source of birth. There is a rebuttal to this: In the case of the realm, the eighteen realms are spoken of from the perspective of the root and the object, but in the case of the source of birth, if only the root and the object are spoken of, why is the support not spoken of? The answer is: The Blessed One...
