are exhausted. Afflictions are abandoned. Having attained the wisdom of liberation, saying that one will not be born in another existence, is called knowing the undefiled liberation of wisdom as it is. Just as one knows that the defilements in one's own continuum are exhausted, so too, knowing how to cause the defilements in the continuum of other sentient beings to be exhausted is called the power of exhausting defilements. Thus, the nature, distinctions, non-mixture, equality, function, order, and special characteristics of these ten powers will be explained. So, what is the nature of these ten powers? It should be known that their nature is the nature of the five undefiled faculties such as faith. Alternatively, it should be known that among these, wisdom is the most important, therefore it is the nature of wisdom. The distinction is that these ten powers are divided into three types, and it should be known that they are of limitless essence. The three types are the distinction of time, the distinction of form, and the distinction of continuum. Among these, the distinction of time is for comprehending all knowable things belonging to the past, future, and present times. The distinction of form is for comprehending all the forms that exist in a single conditioned phenomenon, such as its own characteristic, general characteristic, form, and formlessness. The distinction of continuum is for comprehending the nature of the individual continuums of all sentient beings residing in the limitless ten directions of the world. Thus, having comprehended the three distinctions, it should be known that these ten powers are of limitless nature. So, these unmixed ten powers are possessed only by the Tathagata, and are not possessed by others such as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Equality is that all Tathagatas are equal in having attained these ten powers, without any difference in size. Therefore, it is said that all Tathagatas abide in equality, and in conjunction with the benefit of sentient beings, sometimes they manifest some, and sometimes they do not manifest some, there is only this difference. The function is

So, with what power do these ten powers perform what actions? Among them, with the power of knowing what is and what is not, one truly knows that cause is also cause, and effect is also effect, and subdues the Shramanas and Brahmins who say there is no cause and who disagree with the cause. With the power of the wisdom of knowing one's own karma, one truly knows that one's own actions are experienced by oneself as fruition, and subdues the Shramanas and Brahmins who speak of merit such as giving and transference. With the power of knowing meditation, liberation, samadhi, and attainment, one tames sentient beings with the miracles of teaching, the miracles of instruction, and the miracles of magical powers, and teaches the correct instructions, subduing the Brahmins and Shramanas who speak of disagreements and contradictions with their respective views, and who refute them. With the power of knowing the superior and non-superior faculties, one truly knows the sharp, medium, and dull faculties of sentient beings, and teaches them the corresponding Dharma accordingly. With the power of knowing various aspirations, one truly knows the great, medium, and small aspirations for virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas, and causes those who aspire to virtue to increase virtue, and causes those who aspire to non-virtue to begin to abandon non-virtue. With the power of knowing various realms, one truly knows the small, medium, and large lineages, and according to their faculties, intentions, and habits, one trains those who are to be tamed with the appropriate means. With the wisdom of knowing the path that goes everywhere, one truly understands the path that truly liberates from all suffering, and the path that does not liberate from all suffering, thereby abandoning the path that does not liberate, and establishing sentient beings on the path that liberates.

Through the power of remembering previous abodes, one remembers how sentient beings were born in the past and the aggregates, and after knowing this, one protects them, generates faith, and teaches the Dharma, and subdues the shramanas and brahmins who speak falsely. Through the wisdom of knowing death and rebirth, the Tathagata can predict the dangers of the past and the future, and how one will be born in the future, and subdues the shramanas and brahmins who speak falsely. Through the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements, one no longer has doubts about one's own liberation, no longer has hesitation, and subdues the shramanas and brahmins who have the arrogance of having attained Arhatship. These are the functions of the ten powers of the Tathagata. So, how should one understand the order of these ten powers? When the Tathagata attains the unsurpassed Bodhi, he obtains all ten powers simultaneously, and after obtaining them, he manifests them sequentially. Immediately after attaining perfect enlightenment, the Tathagata first observes the establishment of the causes and effects of all dharmas with the wisdom of knowing what is and is not. After observing in this way, for sentient beings in the desire realm who want to obtain pleasing results, with the power of the wisdom of knowing their own karma, he teaches the method of abandoning non-virtuous actions and practicing virtuous actions. For sentient beings who want to abandon the desire for the worldly path, with the power of knowing dhyana, liberation, samadhi, and samapatti, in order to be free from worldly desire, in order to obtain the worldly path, he truly proclaims the correct instructions. For those who want to be free from the desire for the supramundane path, he teaches the Dharma with the remaining seven powers in order to attain freedom from supramundane desire. How does he teach? First, with the power of knowing the superior and inferior faculties, he enables one to be free from supramundane desire.
