It is timeless so that distinction can be quickly obtained without taking a long time. Therefore, it is said in other sutras that monks who practice proper attention will prevent unarisen desire defilements from arising, and will quickly abandon those that have arisen. It is called "near attainment" because it can obtain liberation from all the sufferings of samsara, or it can attain nirvana and lead to that place. Therefore, it is called "near attainment," because by becoming accustomed to it, one gradually becomes liberated from the sufferings of samsara and goes to the place of nirvana. It is called "seeing" because such a dharma does not exist in other non-Buddhist schools, because it is unique, it is called "seeing." Because such a dharma is only seen in the Buddhist dharma, it does not exist in other views of non-Buddhists and others. It is called "the wise know for themselves" because such a dharma is not the domain of logicians, and cannot be understood by logicians, but is seen and known by wise people through their inner self-wisdom, therefore it is called "the wise know for themselves." In order to further show other qualities, it is said, "it makes one without pride," etc. Because it eliminates attachment and pride in high birth, beauty, health, and longevity, it is "it makes one without pride." It is called "it makes one without desire" because it abandons attachment to the qualities of desire. It is called "it destroys all places" because it becomes a method of abandoning the five aggregates that are the basis of suffering and affliction. Or, because it abandons all the latent tendencies of affliction, it is "it destroys all places." Because it cuts off the cycle of the five paths, or cuts off the uninterrupted stream of life from one life to another, it is "cutting off the path." Because it shows that there is no self-entity, it is emptiness. Because it also shows that the self is not established, it is signlessness. Because it becomes the cause of abandoning attachment to the body and enjoyment of other lives, it is finite. Because it also abandons attachment to the body and enjoyment of this life, it is

is free from attachment. Because it is the path to attain cessation and nirvana by abandoning all aggregates of afflictions and suffering, it is called cessation and nirvana. Alternatively, there are three types of Dharma: the Dharma of teaching, the Dharma of realization, and the Dharma of fruition. Among these, from "the Holy Dharma is well-spoken" up to "the wise know for themselves," the qualities of the Dharma of teaching are shown. Thus, from "making one without arrogance" up to "free from attachment," the qualities of the Dharma of realization are shown. "Cessation and nirvana" shows the Dharma of fruition. Having faith and trust in the Dharma that possesses these qualities is called having faith in the Holy Dharma. This shows that the Buddha's Dharma is distinct from the Dharma of non-Buddhists and others. How is it different? Because their Dharma is taught in a reversed manner, it is not well-spoken. It is merely following faith, and cannot be measured by valid cognition, so it is not the arising of the Dharma of view. Because it is not the antidote to afflictions and near afflictions, it is not without disease. Because it will later decline, it is not timeless. Because it does not lead to the attainment of the state of nirvana, it is not a guide. The Dharma of non-Buddhists is common to each other, so it is not seen here. Their Dharma is the domain of speculation, so it is not known by the wise themselves. Because it does not eliminate attachment to lineage and form, etc., it is not making one without arrogance. Because it does not eliminate attachment to desirable qualities, it is not making one without desire. Because it does not abandon the five aggregates, it is not destroying the place. Because it does not cut off the five paths and the continuum of life, it is not cutting off the path. Because it shows that there is self, it is not emptiness. Because it shows that there is self, it is not showing the absence of characteristics. Because it does not act as an antidote to attachment to future body and enjoyment, it is not the exhaustion of craving. Because it does not abandon attachment to present aggregates and possessions, it is not free from attachment. Because it is not the path to attain nirvana, it is not cessation and nirvana.
