Since breathing out occurs dependent on the mind, therefore dependent on the mind. When focusing on how the breath is exhaled, knowing each of the mind's formations, clearly exhaling the breath, knowing each of the mind's formations, clearly exhaling the breath, this is called truly knowing as it is. Breathing in is also breathing in dependent on the mind, when dependent on the mind and focusing on how the breath is inhaled, truly knowing each of the mind's formations, clearly inhaling the breath, truly knowing each of the mind's formations, clearly inhaling the breath, this is called truly knowing as it is, this is the eleventh. Thus, Thus, when one experiences joy separately or experiences bliss separately, if due to a hundred or so deluded memories, the mind is agitated by deluded thoughts such as "I," or "I am mine," or "mine will arise," or "will not arise," or "will become form," or "will become formless," or "with perception," or "without perception," or "neither with nor without perception," then quickly and swiftly realize this with wisdom, and focus on the exhaling and inhaling of breath, not allowing those realizations to remain, but thoroughly abandoning and eliminating them. This is from "my mind's formations are utterly purified, exhaling breath" to "my mind's formations are utterly purified, inhaling breath," truly knowing as it is, this is the twelfth. Having meditated in this way, if the mind is oppressed by the obscurations of sleep and delusion, and the mind becomes unclear, then focus on some object that makes the mind joyful and clear, and uplift and gladden the mind. Again, when focusing on the object moving inwardly and outwardly, my mind is manifestly joyful, inhaling breath. This is called truly knowing as it is, this is the thirteenth. Thus, relying more on that object, meditating, and focusing more on the inward and outward movement of breath, the obscurations that manifest, such as dullness and agitation, will be distanced, my obscurations

When it says, "Eliminating the obstacles," from "My mind is completely liberated, exhaling," to "My mind is completely liberated, inhaling," knowing it as it is, this is called the fourteenth. If, when meditating in that way, one sees that one is obscured by the obstacle of agitation and the obstacle of doubt, one focuses on the two, exhaling and inhaling, gathers the mind and places it within, making it peaceful. When the mind is placed in one-pointedness, from "My mind is equally placed, exhaling," to "My mind is equally placed, inhaling," knowing it as it is, this is called the fifteenth. When the mind has become completely liberated from those obstacles, and there remains a residual latent tendency that interrupts the meditation, in order to abandon them, one manifests the path of meditating on the four noble truths. This is done as follows: First, one realizes the truth of suffering, saying, "All conditioned phenomena are of the nature of impermanence," and therefore one sees impermanence in that way. Thus it is said. That yogi previously relied on the first, second, and third dhyanas, and having relied on what should not be heard, has become accustomed to calm abiding. Now, because of impermanence and subsequent seeing, one makes insight accustomed. Thus, his mind, having become accustomed to calm abiding and insight, thereafter delights in the three realms. The three realms are the realm of detachment, the realm of cessation, and the realm of individual abandonment. Among these, delighting in abandoning all conditioned phenomena to be abandoned by meditation is seeing detachment. Delighting in abandoning all aggregates is seeing cessation. Delighting in abandoning all conditioned phenomena to be abandoned by seeing is called seeing individual abandonment. At the time of exhaling and inhaling, if such delusion arises, one knows as it is, "Exhaling," and like seeing individual abandonment, one knows as it is, "Inhaling," and like seeing individual abandonment, one thoroughly knows, "Inhaling."

It is called awareness. Furthermore, seeing the aggregates of suffering as having the nature of destruction is seeing impermanence. Seeing the origin as having the nature of being abandoned is seeing detachment from desire. Seeing cessation as having the nature of being realized is seeing cessation. Seeing the truth of the path as that which eliminates afflictions is called seeing individual abandonment. In order to conclude the teaching of the sixteen aspects of mindfulness of breathing, the Buddha said, "Monks, know the sixteen aspects of mindfulness of breathing." After teaching the sixteen aspects of mindfulness of breathing, the four limbs of entering the stream were taught. Wishing to explain as it was taught, he said, "What are the four limbs of entering the stream?" etc. Here, "stream" refers to the noble path. Just as a river flows into the ocean, so too does this path lead to the city of Nirvana. Therefore, the path is the stream. Entering that path or attaining that path is entering the stream. The four dharmas that are companions to the path are called the four limbs of entering the stream, and are also called the four kinds of faith that are fully known by the noble ones. Among them, the noble disciple, "The Blessed One, he also," up to "Having followed the Buddha, he is endowed with faith," is the first limb of entering the stream. "The Blessed One has well-spoken the Dharma," up to "He is endowed with faith in the Dharma," is the second limb of entering the stream. "The Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples," up to "These eight types of persons," is the third limb. Thus, "Having complete faith in the Sangha of the Blessed One's disciples," up to "He is endowed with the morality of a wise person who is not despised by the noble ones," is the fourth limb. "Noble disciple" refers to those who have entered the stream of abandoning desire, abandoning hatred, and abandoning delusion, and who are learning, as well as those who have abandoned desire, hatred, and delusion, and abide in the fruit of the Arhat, the state of no more learning.
