will arise. When that body becomes extremely pure and the mind becomes extremely pure, touching single-pointedness of mind and constantly abiding the mind on the object is pleasing. Thus, to become extremely accustomed to this is through the manner of attending to the objects of the senses and their realms. It enters into the aggregates. How does it enter? Like this, the support for exhaling and inhaling is the body. Thinking that it relies on the body, one enters into and understands the aggregate of form. Whatever mindfulness focuses on those exhalations and inhalations, holding and experiencing their characteristics without forgetting them, is entering into the aggregate of feeling. There, whatever has complete knowledge is the aggregate of perception, thus entering into the aggregate of perception. Whatever memory, samadhi, intention, and wisdom are present at that time are the aggregate of formations. Thus, one enters into the aggregate of formations. Whatever mind, intellect, and consciousness are present at that time are the aggregate of consciousness, thus entering into the aggregate of consciousness. Entering in this way is called being extremely accustomed to the aggregates. When that yogi sees and thoroughly understands only the aggregates, only formations, and only objects, at that time, the nature of those aggregates themselves arising in dependence and connection thoroughly enters. How does it enter? That yogi completely seeks in this way. Like this, what do exhaling and inhaling depend on? From what cause do they arise? Having investigated, he will understand in this way: exhaling and inhaling depend on the body, arise from the cause of the body, depend on the mind, and arise from the cause of the mind. Having investigated what causes the body and mind to abide, he also understands that it is the place of support for the power of life at present. Having investigated what causes the power of life to arise, he also understands that it arises from the causes of virtuous and non-virtuous actions of other lifetimes. Having investigated what causes the previous formations to arise, he also understands that it arises from the cause of ignorance.

Thus, due to ignorance, the aggregates previously act. Due to the previous aggregates, there is the life force. From the life force, there are body and consciousness. From body and mind, breathing in and breathing out arise. When ignorance ceases, aggregates cease. When aggregates cease, the life force ceases. When the life force ceases, body and mind cease. When body and mind cease, breathing in and breathing out cease. Thus, one enters into dependent origination. How does one become fully familiar with entering the truth? By becoming very familiar with dependent origination in this way, one understands that these conditioned dharmas are dependently originated, that is, impermanent. Because these are impermanent, they arise from nothing and, having arisen, cease. That which has become like that is subject to birth, subject to aging, subject to sickness, and whatever is subject to birth, aging, sickness, and death is suffering. Whatever is suffering is selfless, utterly without power, without a master. Thus, he enters into the truth of suffering in the aspects of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Furthermore, what does this mean? The aggregates of suffering, having become suffering, having become disease, having become fruit, the cause that produces these is existence, thus entering into the truth of origin. Completely abandoning the craving that produces suffering is serene peace, thus entering into the truth of cessation. Whoever knows thus, sees thus, understands thus, is the truth of the path, and also enters into the truth of the path. Thus, he has entered into the four truths. The yogi, having become familiar with the four truths, having completely abandoned the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, in order to abandon the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, diligently familiarizes himself with the sixteen aspects. What are the sixteen aspects? When mindfully breathing out, one knows that one is mindfully breathing out, knowing as it truly is.

Starting from what is called "So," just as one observes abandoning each separately, so too with inhaling. Just as one observes abandoning each separately, inhaling, knowing this as it truly is. Monks, this is what is said in the sutras as the sixteen aspects of mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. How are these sixteen terms to be distinguished in detail? Previously, during the practice of the four truths, a learner who has seen the four truths, having attained the object of the four close placements of mindfulness, in order to abandon the remaining afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation, strives to attend to breathing in and breathing out. When exhaling, because the mind is not confused, knowing the characteristic of exhaling as it truly is, this is exhaling with mindfulness, exhaling with mindfulness, knowing this as it truly is. When inhaling, without distraction, focusing on that itself with mindfulness, knowing that this is inhaling with mindfulness, inhaling with mindfulness, knowing this as it truly is, this is the first of the sixteen. When one focuses on exhaling and inhaling, at that time, knowing that the exhalation is long, the exhalation is long, knowing this as it truly is, knowing the breath is long, and when inhaling long, also knowing that the inhalation is long, knowing this as it truly is, this is the second. When one attends to the interval between exhaling and inhaling, from what is called a short exhalation, to a short inhalation, knowing this as it truly is, this is the third. Or, when a yogi focuses on exhaling, starting from the navel area, the breath comes out from the mouth and nose, focusing on how far it extends outside, whether it is a span, a cubit, or a fathom, this is knowing that the exhalation is long, the exhalation is long, knowing this as it truly is. When a yogi focuses on inhaling, starting from the mouth and nose, to the navel, how short the breath is
