There are also four names for exhaling and inhaling: wind, the body's activities, exhaling and inhaling, and the outward and inward flow of breath. Among these, the name "wind" is common to all, including non-Buddhists and worldly people. The remaining three are uncommon, because these names are only well-known in this teaching. There are also two kinds of defilements that enter into exhaling and inhaling: combining too loosely and combining too tightly. Among these, combining too loosely leads to the arising of laziness, sleep, and drowsiness suppressing the mind, or the mind subsequently becoming distracted. Combining too tightly also leads to disharmony of the body and the arising of disharmony of the mind. So, how does disharmony of the body arise? If one focuses intently on exhaling and inhaling with force, unpleasant winds will arise in the body, and the wind will be excessively agitated. Because the wind is excessively agitated, the limbs and minor limbs will become scattered, and therefore it is called physical agitation. In this way, if the wind of physical agitation increases, it will transform into the interior of the body in the limbs and minor limbs, and this is disharmony of the body. How does disharmony of the mind arise? Due to focusing too tightly, the mind becomes scattered. Due to the increase of mental scattering, one will be overwhelmed by displeasure and disturbance, and this is called the arising of disharmony of the mind. Therefore, it should be known that there are five ways to become familiar with this exhaling and inhaling: becoming familiar through counting, becoming familiar through expertise in the aggregates, becoming familiar through entering into dependent origination, becoming familiar through entering into the truth, and becoming familiar through the sixteen aspects. So, what is becoming familiar through counting? In short, there are four ways: counting one by one, counting two as one, counting in order, and counting in reverse. So, what is counting one by one? When the breath enters,

When entering (breath counting), one counts "one" with mindfulness focused on exhaling and inhaling. When the inhalation ceases, and the exhalation arises and disappears, then one counts "two." Counting in this way up to ten is called counting two-in-one. What is counting according to the method? It is counting from one, as mentioned before, or counting two-in-one, counting all the way to counting in sequence. This is called counting according to the method. What is counting in reverse? It is counting "one" after reaching ten. Counting "two" when counting nine. Counting "three" when counting eight, all the way to counting "ten" when counting one. This is called counting in reverse. When that yogi becomes very skilled by counting from one, or counting two-in-one, or counting in reverse, At that time, if the mind is not distracted, and one can only count when not distracted, then before that, one should count other counting differences. What are the other counting differences? It is counting from one, or adding two-in-one and counting as one. Thus, the two-in-one counting method is to combine the exhalation and inhalation into one count. Counting from one is to count the exhalation and inhalation separately. Combining these two, one counts up to ten in the manner of counting. If one becomes skilled in this as well, then one can also combine ten into one and repeat the counting. Starting from counting to ten, then combining one hundred into one, and counting to ten. When a yogi who has entered the counting method is able to combine ten into one and perfectly complete the ten counting methods, and the mind is not distracted during this time, this alone indicates that one has mastered the counting method. Having entered the counting in this way, if the mind becomes disturbed or distracted, one should start counting again from the beginning. What is to be practiced until entering the skandhas (body)? It is that the yogi should rely more on this practice, meditate more, and possess more actions, thereby making the body very pure and the mind very pure.
