Memory arises from seeing similar things, like remembering a son when seeing someone who looks like him. Memory also arises from dissimilar things, like remembering hot and cold. Memory also arises from familiarity; for example, having become familiar with reading, etc., whatever one is familiar with, one will later remember. Memory arises from understanding a single meaning, like remembering sourness upon seeing a mango. The power of calm abiding also gives rise to memory, such as remembering previous abodes, and yogis who know about death and rebirth and know the exhaustion of defilements give rise to memories of their previous lives. Memory also arises from the power of causes, because those who possess merit will remember other lives. Having abandoned all distraction and agitation, if the mind remains upright or balanced, that is true samadhi. Why are the eight limbs of the Noble Path taught in that order? Because yogis who attain nirvana first rely on the Four Noble Truths, therefore, first, right view is taught. Just as one sees, later there arises the thought of whether it is that or not, therefore, after that is right thought. Just as one speaks constantly, therefore after that is right speech. Just as one speaks, later one acts, therefore after right speech is right action. Those who have done right action, their livelihood becomes pure, therefore after right action is right livelihood. Those who possess discipline exert effort in the direction of virtue, and effort increases, therefore after right livelihood is right effort. It is impossible for those who possess effort to lose mindfulness, therefore after that is right mindfulness. Those who possess mindfulness, their minds become one-pointed, therefore, in the end, right samadhi is taught. Why are there eight limbs of the Noble Path? Because there are eight kinds of worldly wrong views, from wrong view to wrong samadhi, and in order to counteract them, eight are taught from right view to right samadhi. Alternatively, right view and right mindfulness are

It is the aspect of Vipassanā (higher seeing). Its result is that if it is separated from ignorance, wisdom is completely liberated. The remaining limbs are the aspect of Samatha (tranquility). Its result is that if it is separated from desire, the mind is completely liberated. Furthermore, right speech, right action, and right livelihood are the aggregates of ethics. Its main function is to cut off the root of anger and non-virtue. Right mindfulness and the aggregate of Samādhi (concentration). Its main function is to cut off the root of desire and non-virtue. Right thought, effort, and view are the aggregates of wisdom. Its function is to cut off the root of delusion and non-virtue. Therefore, these eight noble path limbs can be summarized into six limbs: the limb of complete cutting off, the limb of enabling others to obtain, the limb of making others believe, the limb of purifying the obscurations of afflictions, the limb of purifying the near obscurations of afflictions, and the limb of purifying the obstacles to obtaining special qualities. Among them, right view is the limb of complete cutting off. In the path of seeing, understanding that there is no self, no sentient being, no life, etc., and knowing "I have understood it in this way," it is because the nature of the path of seeing can cut off (wrong views). Right thought is the limb of enabling others to obtain, because one does not speak easily without thinking and analyzing, but after observing the dharmas as they are with right view, one then explains them to others. Right speech, right action, and right livelihood are the limbs of making others believe, because they make people believe in view, ethics, and pure livelihood respectively. Among them, right speech can make people believe in pure views. How to understand it? When one explains the dharmas that one has understood to others with right speech, one can answer the rebuttals of others, and explain clearly and correctly, making others believe that "this person has determined the essence of the dharma, there is no contradiction with the scriptures, and he can explain it clearly, so it can be known that he has truly understood it." Right action is ethics.
