The realm of Baṅ-po is practice, because diligence accomplishes the three trainings. The faculty of mindfulness focuses on the teachings that have been heard, because mindfulness does not forget the meaning of the teachings. The faculty of samādhi focuses on śamatha, because it always exclusively cultivates one-pointedness of mind. The faculty of wisdom focuses on vipaśyanā, because it primarily takes upon itself the task of knowing the individual and general characteristics of all phenomena. Why is the order of the faculties arranged in this way? Because after faith arises in the fruit of nirvāṇa, diligence is undertaken, so diligence follows faith. Those who have undertaken diligence cannot lose mindfulness, so mindfulness follows diligence. If mindfulness is not lost, the mind becomes one-pointed, so the faculty of samādhi follows mindfulness. If the mind becomes one-pointed, wisdom arises just as it is, so wisdom is taught after samādhi. The meaning of the five faculties is to show that the two orders are clearly stated in the sūtras. Among them, what is the faculty of faith? And so on, it has been said. Among them, having faith and trust in the four dharmas is faith. What are these four dharmas? Having faith in the worldly right view that is practiced in saṃsāra is the first. The saying, "Because it relies on the ripening of karma," is the second. Experiencing the ripening of each and every karma that will be done is the third. Not doing sinful deeds even for the sake of one's life is the fourth. Practicing in saṃsāra, or the dharma that belongs to saṃsāra, the view that this world exists and the next world exists, is called the worldly right view that is practiced in saṃsāra. That is, when one views that this exists and the next exists, that worldly view practiced in saṃsāra is called faith. "That" refers to that person who possesses faith. "Relying on the ripening of karma" means believing that there is a ripening of virtuous and non-virtuous karma. "Whatever karma will be done" means whatever virtuous or non-virtuous karma, etc., is done by whomever.

Pa'o. The statement "each will experience the ripening of that particular action" means that if any individual performs a virtuous action, they will experience its ripening as happiness; if any individual performs a non-virtuous action, they will experience its ripening as suffering; and one believes that whoever performs an action will experience it themselves, and no one else will experience that ripening. The statement "therefore, one does not commit sinful actions even for the sake of one's life" means seeing that there is this life and the next, seeing that there are actions and the ripening of actions, and for that individual who will experience the ripening of any action, this is what should be done. Believing that if one commits sinful, non-virtuous deeds, one will experience the result as suffering, and therefore not committing sinful actions such as taking what is not given, even for the sake of one's life, is called the power of faith. To show the power of diligence, it is said, "What is the power of diligence?" and so on. The statement "for which dharma does that dharma become the power of faith" refers to the four dharmas that the power of faith believes in. The statement "accomplished correctly by the power of diligence" means that for that dharma which the power of faith believes in, the power of diligence abandons the non-virtuous side and accomplishes the virtuous side; that is the power of diligence. To show the power of mindfulness, it is said, "What is the power of mindfulness?" and so on. The statement "for which dharma that dharma is accomplished correctly by the power of diligence" means that after abandoning non-virtuous dharmas by the power of diligence, one cultivates and establishes that virtuous dharma, and the power of mindfulness makes that virtuous dharma not confused in the mind and not forgotten; that is called the power of mindfulness. To show the power of concentration, it is said, "What is the power of concentration?" and so on. The statement "which dharma is not seized by the power of mindfulness" refers to which virtuous dharma is not forgotten by the power of mindfulness. The statement "the power of concentration makes that dharma one-pointed" refers to the power of mindfulness not
