In order to do this, initiate diligence, and whatever is believed is the root of faith. Initiating diligence is the root of diligence. After initiating diligence, superior discipline and superior wisdom will arise. Remembering the characteristics of what should be done and what should not be done is the root of mindfulness. The superior training of the mind is the root of samadhi. The superior training of wisdom is the root of wisdom. Or, it is said that the four limbs of abiding in this very sutra are explained. Abiding in the four kinds of faith that are all-knowing is the root of faith. Abiding in the four right abandonments is the root of diligence. Abiding in the four close placements of mindfulness is the root of mindfulness. Abiding in the four dhyanas is the root of samadhi. Knowing the four noble truths is the root of wisdom. The meaning of root is the meaning of being able to dominate. What does it dominate? Faith is faith that has become the cause of the arising of dharmas that transcend the world, and diligence also dominates mindfulness, wisdom, and samadhi, because those dharmas arise through the power of faith. Diligence also dominates mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom. Mindfulness also dominates both wisdom and samadhi. Samadhi also dominates wisdom. Wisdom dominates the manifestation of dharmas that transcend the world. Just as consciousness arises through the power of the senses such as the eye, so also those dharmas cause one another to arise, and therefore they are called roots. Or, faith is to admire and believe in the Three Jewels without any duality. Or, faith is the arising of joy in the mind from manifesting joy in qualities and the place of qualities. Or, faith is believing that one experiences the results of happiness and suffering from virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Diligence is abandoning non-virtuous dharmas without any lack in body and mind, and rejoicing in the mind to manifest virtuous dharmas. Or, diligence is called the actions of body and speech that are devoted to superior actions. In this way, diligence in doing evil and non-virtuous dharmas is not diligence because of laziness. Remembering things experienced before

Memory is recollection. Alternatively, the clear appearance of an object of focus in the mind is memory. Alternatively, the act of holding a sign in the mind without losing it, and even if it is lost, making it manifest again, is memory. Alternatively, there are four aspects of memory: the memory of holding letters without forgetting them; the memory of holding letters without applying them to meaning; the memory of holding meaning without abandoning constant attention; and the memory of making meaning manifest from constant attention, enabling one to see. The nine states of mind abiding are samadhi. Alternatively, just as a lamp in a windless room does not flicker, the continuous flow of mind arising as one, unmoved by the winds of afflictions, is samadhi. Comprehending the four truths as they truly are is wisdom. Alternatively, wisdom is called prajñā (Sanskrit Devanagari: प्रज्ञा, Sanskrit Romanization: prajñā, Chinese literal meaning: wisdom) in the Indian language, where "pra" (Sanskrit Devanagari: प्र, Sanskrit Romanization: pra, Chinese literal meaning: excellent, superior) means excellent, and "jñā" (Sanskrit Devanagari: ज्ञा, Sanskrit Romanization: jñā, Chinese literal meaning: knowing) means knowing. To know suffering excellently, to abandon the origin excellently, to realize cessation, and to cultivate the path excellently is wisdom. Among these, the faculty of wisdom is the aspect of insight, because wisdom arises in those who possess mindfulness, so the faculty of mindfulness is its cause. The faculty of samadhi is the aspect of calm abiding, because those who constantly exert effort become single-pointed in mind, so the faculty of effort is its cause. Because everything arises from the cause of faith, faith is the cause of both calm abiding and insight. Alternatively, faith refers to the aggregate of discipline, because those who possess faith maintain discipline. The two faculties of effort and samadhi indicate the aggregate of samadhi along with its cause, because effort is the cause of samadhi. Mindfulness and wisdom indicate the aggregate of wisdom along with its continuity, because mindfulness is the cause of the aggregate of wisdom. Among these, the objects of the five faculties are five: enlightenment, conduct, the Dharma of hearing, calm abiding, and insight. The object of the faculty of faith is enlightenment, because faith primarily gives rise to joy in the knowledge of that which is exhausted and does not arise. The effort of
