Now, it is because the mind becomes distracted. It is to abandon the five faults. The eight activities of abandonment are: aspiration, diligence, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, awareness, attention, and equanimity. Among them, aspiration is the arising of the desire: When shall I perfect samadhi? How shall I abandon the latent tendencies? How shall I abandon sinful, unwholesome dharmas? Diligence is to engage in the constant and uninterrupted cultivation of the antidote as long as possible. Faith is the arising of faith and confidence that by constantly entering and abiding, one will obtain higher qualities. Among them, pliancy is the arising of joy in the mind because faith has manifested. From joy in the mind comes ease in the body. From ease in the body comes ease in the mind. When the mind is at ease, the mind becomes workable. When the mind becomes workable, it is pliancy that eliminates sinful, unwholesome dharmas and the direction of bad rebirths. Among them, mindfulness belongs to the side of tranquility, and there are nine ways in which the mind abides. The nine ways are: placing the mind inward, continuous placing, repeated placing, close placing, taming, pacifying, thoroughly pacifying, single-pointedness, and equipoise. Among them, collecting the mind from external objects and initially collecting the mind inward in a non-distracted manner is placing the mind. After initially collecting the mind, the mind moves towards external objects, and gross thoughts arise. Collecting that gross mind inward again is continuous placing. After abiding in this way, if the mind becomes distracted because mindfulness has weakened, collecting it again is repeated placing. After that, obtaining the characteristic of the mind not being distracted outwardly from the beginning is close placing. From the very beginning, seeing objects such as form, which cause distraction, as having faults and, influenced by this perception, not letting the mind wander is taming. Seeing the near afflictions such as conceptual thought, which cause mental disturbance, as having faults and not letting the mind wander is pacifying.

Oh! If various conceptual thoughts arise due to loss of mindfulness, not allowing them to remain is to pacify them. Accompanying effort, constantly abiding in the continuity of samadhi without interruption is to make it focused. Through well-cultivated samadhi, without intentional effort, naturally and continuously abiding in the continuity of samadhi is to evenly place the mind. Among these, knowing is the wisdom that belongs to the aspect of insight. That is, analyzing, establishing, thoroughly calculating, and searching for phenomena, these four. Knowing how many aggregates, elements, etc., exist is analyzing. Knowing how these phenomena abide, such as impermanence, suffering, etc., is establishing. With wisdom accompanied by conceptual thoughts, first searching for the nature of phenomena is thoroughly calculating. After that, detailed observation is called searching. Attention is the manifestation and creation of the mind, examining whether afflictions have arisen or not, whether they have been abandoned or not, and then engaging in their abandonment, this is the function of the mind that accords with tranquility and insight. Equanimity is the mind being in a state of equality, abiding in the nature of immovability. In order to abandon laziness, one should cultivate the four types of abandoning effort: aspiration, diligence, faith, and pliancy. Among these, aspiration is the nature of desire. Diligence is the nature of effort. Faith is the nature of trust. Pliancy is the nature of being able to function. If asked how these four become the antidote to laziness, the answer is: they become the antidote by relying on the basis, object, sign, and result of diligence. Among these, the basis of diligence is aspiration. The object is diligence itself. Because if there is desire, one will initiate diligence. The sign and cause of desire is faith, because if there is trust, desire and aspiration will arise. The result of diligence is pliancy, because after initiating diligence, the body becomes pliable, so the pliancy of the mind is pliancy.
