Various versions should be printed. A friend refers to faith, belief, wisdom, concentration, and so on, which arise from the mind and are accompanied by diligence. Among these, cultivation refers to generating faith, striving and initiating diligence, with the mind fully focused and truly aspiring. This is what was said. The basis of these words is initiating diligence, which explains cultivation, and faith is the basis of diligence. Why is that? Because if there is desire and faith, then diligence will arise from its cause. Among these, if the mind becomes agitated by the characteristics of tranquility and insight, then one should remember the faults of samsara and tame the mind; if the mind becomes dull, then one should remember the qualities of the Tathagata and uplift the mind. To cultivate only tranquility and insight without remembering the characteristics that uplift the mind is exertion. When the mind becomes agitated or dull, in order to eliminate it, remembering the characteristics of tranquility and insight that are the antidote to agitation and dullness is called initiating diligence. Furthermore, when the mind is distracted, remembering tranquility and making it gather is called fully focusing the mind. When the mind is depressed, remembering superior insight and uplifting the mind is called truly aspiring. The fruit of cultivation is to diminish all unfavorable aspects and to obtain and increase the antidotal Dharma. Among these, the above two right abandonments show the diminishing of unfavorable aspects. The third right abandonment shows the obtaining of antidotal aspects. The fourth right abandonment shows the increasing of antidotal aspects. After explaining the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power are explained. Therefore, because this is the time to explain it. What are the four legs of magical power? It is said, and so on. Among these, magical power refers to the application of direct perception of the eye and so on. The four samadhis of faith and so on are the cause and condition for the arising of direct perception, therefore they are called the legs of magical power. Or, the person who has legs, that

Just as one has the power to come and go, etc., so too, whoever has the four concentrations also obtains transmundane wealth and has the power to manifest, therefore it is called the foot of miraculous power. In order to show the first foot of miraculous power, it is said, "Monks, the foot of miraculous power endowed with the concentration of aspiration and the activity of abandoning," and so on. For whatever one aspires to and believes in suffering, emptiness, selflessness, etc., and thereby generates respect for diligence, strives to enter, and touches one-pointedness of mind, that is called the concentration of aspiration. Or, in order not to generate unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, to abandon unwholesome dharmas that have arisen, to generate wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, and to maintain wholesome dharmas that have arisen, one-pointedness of mind arises from the great increase of aspiration and faith, which is called the concentration of aspiration. There are five faults in meditating on the concentration of aspiration. In order to abandon the five faults, one should meditate on the eight antidotal activities of abandoning. The five faults are laziness, loss of instruction, laxity and excitement, non-application, and application. Among these, laxity and excitement are combined into one fault. Laziness is not engaging in abandoning the unwholesome and accomplishing the wholesome, which is laziness. It obscures the time when one does not engage in virtue from the very beginning, which is a fault. Not forgetting the instruction is when the pith instructions of meditation, as taught, are forgotten in word and meaning. When one engages in the practice of meditation, forgetting the meaning of meditation becomes an obstacle, which is a fault. When the mind engages in the practice of meditation and attains one-pointedness, laxity and excitement severely disrupt it, which is a fault. If these two arise, the mind becomes unserviceable. When laxity and excitement arise, not attending to the signs that will eliminate them is a fault. If these two are not clear, the mind will not be pacified. When one is free from laxity and excitement and the mind attains equanimity, making an effort is a fault, because it will deviate from equanimity.
