Arising with a past object as its focus is arising with a hidden object as its focus. Whatever arises with a present object as its focus is arising with a manifest object as its focus. Therein, combining the two correct abandonments, the meaning is shown in brief: For the sake of not generating sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, which arise with a hidden object as their focus, and for abandoning those that have arisen, exerting effort is called diligence. For the sake of not generating sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, which arise with a manifest object as their focus, and for abandoning those that have arisen, effort is called initiating diligence. Alternatively, some sins and non-virtuous dharmas arise due to the occasion of conceptual thought, and there are also those that arise due to the power of the object. Some sins and non-virtuous dharmas also arise due to the power of conceptual thought. Therein, arising due to the power of conceptual thought is when one is abiding, even if one has not encountered an object, it arises with past and future things as its object. Therein, arising from the power of conceptual thought and the power of the object is when one is engaging in activity, taking present things as the object, and there also, it arises due to the power of the arising of inappropriate attention. Therein, arising due to the power of conceptual thought is that for the sake of not generating sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and for the sake of abandoning those that have arisen, striving is called diligence. Whatever arises from the power of conceptual thought and the power of the object, for the sake of not generating sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and for the sake of abandoning those that have arisen, effort is called initiating diligence. Alternatively, there are three types of afflictions: small, large, and medium. Therein, for the small and medium afflictions, not generating those that have not arisen, and abandoning those that have arisen is called diligence. For the large afflictions, not generating those that have not arisen, and abandoning those that have arisen is called initiating diligence. Therein, for not generating sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and for engaging in abandoning those that have arisen, one sees that the mind has become distracted, and at that time, one meditates on calm abiding.

To apply the mind to a single point is called thorough retention of the mind. When one enters in order not to generate unwholesome and sinful dharmas that have not arisen, and to abandon those that have arisen, if one sees the mind oppressed by dullness and darkness and contracted inward, or if one fears that timidity will arise, then contemplating the qualities of the Tathagata, which make the mind soar, or contemplating the fruit of meditation, or cultivating higher vision and dispelling sleep and dullness, is called right aspiration. In order to teach the third right abandonment, it is said, "Generating the unarisen wholesome dharmas," and so forth. Here, wholesome dharmas are the ten virtues, such as refraining from killing, or the three trainings, such as morality, or the dharmas that are the cause of generating the three trainings. The cause of the three trainings is that if one turns back from the cause of the deterioration of the three trainings, one should know that these are the cause of the arising of the three trainings. Unarisen means that those dharmas have not manifested, or the mind has not arisen. Arisen means that those dharmas arise manifestly in the mind. Among these, the strong desire that I quickly obtain and manifest those wholesome dharmas that have not been obtained and have not manifested is called generating aspiration. Effort and initiating diligence, etc., are explained because they need to be combined with the meaning of the four right abandonments and need to be taught. In order to teach the fourth right abandonment, it is said, "Generating the unarisen wholesome dharmas," and so forth. Wholesome dharmas are those that were explained in the context of the third right abandonment. Making manifest the wholesome dharmas that have been obtained is called abiding. Making the manifest dharma not be confused and be clear in the mind is called non-forgetting. The non-forgetting dharma not being robbed by opposing factors is called non-wavering. Thus, for the wholesome dharmas that have been obtained, the dharmas that have manifested, cultivating, relying on, and increasing them, making them complete and ultimate, is called cultivation and vastness, and making them complete. The desire to make these arisen wholesome dharmas complete from abiding
