Increasing greatly is to generate faith and understanding. For the virtuous dharmas that have been attained, exerting effort to make them manifest is called "diligence." Exerting effort to attain the virtuous dharmas that have not been attained is called "initiating diligence." For the virtuous dharmas that have arisen, causing them to abide, not be forgotten, and not decline is "diligence." Cultivating, expanding, and perfecting those virtuous dharmas is "initiating diligence." Alternatively, there are three types of virtue: small, medium, and large. For the small and medium virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, causing them to arise; for those that have arisen, causing them to abide, not be forgotten, and not decline is called "diligence." For the large virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, causing them to arise; for those that have arisen, cultivating, increasing, and perfecting them is called "initiating diligence." When cultivating these virtuous dharmas, if the mind becomes distracted, one should cultivate calm-abiding and make the mind focus on one point, which is called "mindfulness." At that time, if one is overcome by drowsiness and sleep, and the mind becomes dejected, one should recall the qualities of the Tathagata or the fruits of meditation to uplift the mind, or cultivate insight to dispel drowsiness and sleep, which is called "right abandonment." In short, the four right abandonments reveal the nature of dharma, namely the dark side and the bright side. For unwholesome and negative dharmas that have not arisen, preventing them from arising; and for those that have arisen, abandoning them is the dark side. For wholesome dharmas that have not arisen, causing them to arise; and for those that have arisen, causing them to abide is the bright side. Thus, through the four modes of abandonment, all four will become right abandonment. There are four types of abandonment: completely abandoning through right restraint, completely abandoning through having abandoned, completely abandoning through cultivation, and completely abandoning through subsequent protection. Among these, saying "not causing them to arise" etc. for unwholesome and negative dharmas that have not arisen indicates completely abandoning through having abandoned, which is abandoning the manifestation of unwholesome and negative dharmas in the mind, in order to prevent them from manifesting.

Exerting effort is to thoroughly abandon by abandoning what will not arise later. To abandon the sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen, etc., is to thoroughly abandon by correctly restraining. That is, to abandon through restraint so that those sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have arisen will never arise from the continuum in the future. To generate the virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, etc., shows thorough abandonment through cultivation. Thus, the virtuous dharmas that have not arisen are to be generated through reliance, and those that have arisen are to be attained through cultivation, and those that have been attained are made manifest, so that those unfavorable aspects will be transformed. For the virtuous dharmas that have arisen, abiding, etc., shows abandonment through subsequent protection. Whatever virtuous dharmas have arisen, abandoning them by being careless towards their unfavorable aspects, and abiding by relying on mindfulness, which has become their companion, and doing completion, etc., then obscurations will disappear for them. In short, the things to be abandoned and the things to be adopted, the abandonment and the perfection of the intention to adopt, and the perfection of the application have been shown. Among them, the first two of the correct abandonments are the things to be abandoned. The latter of the correct abandonments are the things to be adopted. Generating aspiration shows the perfection of intention. Exerting effort and initiating diligence, holding the mind completely and making correct aspirations, etc., shows the perfection of application. The four correct abandonments also have objects, nature, companions, cultivation, and the fruit of cultivation. Among them, what are the objects of the correct abandonments? They are the unfavorable aspects and the antidotes that have arisen and have not arisen. Among them, the first correct abandonment is focused on the unfavorable aspects that have not arisen. The second correct abandonment is focused on the unfavorable aspects that have arisen. The third correct abandonment is focused on the antidotes that have not arisen. The fourth correct abandonment is focused on the antidotes that have arisen. The nature of correct abandonment is the nature of diligence.
